Toronto Fashion Week: David Dixon stirs the melting pot
We always knew that David Dixon was a popular guy, but the massive crush at the door (we even had to kick a few brazen imposters out of our seats!) was a true testament to his reputation as an established Canadian designer. The collection was safe, shape-wise, and Dixon focused his lens on blending cultural references for his new “Global Tribe.” This meant showcasing swaths of Spanish woven raffia on cocktail dresses, Japanese print jackets, Canadian wild fur stoles and Indian mosaic tile mirrored dresses to deliver his melting-pot message. But it wouldn’t be a Dixon collection without a little romance, so his finale dresses featured red carpet-ready, fluttering, feather-like appliqués.

Toronto Fashion Week: Comrags kicks it with a laid back fall show
Judging from their Fall 2010 collection of plaid frocks, oversized sweaters and quirky wool skirt suiting, it’s easy to see why Comrags has developed a cult following over their nearly three decades in the biz. Designers Judy Cornish and Joyce Gunhouse consistently stick to their no-fail formula of texture + simple lines + a natural aesthetic = forever pieces. This season, the latter included a knee-length tartan skirt, several digital reptile print dresses, borrowed-from-your-boyfriend roomy knits and an olive green wool skirt suit. Never one to be overly precious, the Comrags girl throws on her distressed combat boots with, well, everything. Big love.

Toronto Fashion Week: Lucian Matis goes back to his effusively-embellished roots for fall
Not that I would have expected a simple camel coat from the likes of Lucian Matis, but after a week–or really, two months–of restrained, neutral taste, Matis’ no-holds-barred embellishment was something of a breath of fresh air. To be sure, Matis’ more-is-more-is-more style isn’t for everyone–certainly not for shrinking violets–and the dress-filled show (Matis saves separates for his Daphne by Lucian Matis line, sold on The Shopping Channel) leaves the over-the-top party-goer with plenty of options.
For his fall collection, Matis took a dip into his Romanian heritage and came out with high necklines, peasant tops and vests and folkloric detailing. Best were pieces done in Matis-designed prints that looked like the interior of a treasure chest, especially a short, one-shoulder number that featured an exaggerated pouf. A column gown done in the same print, laid out in a way that brought to mind–distantly–the alien patterns at Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2010 show, would have been better without an overpowering black shoulder bow. A crinkled leather jacket with embellished sleeves will be easier to wear day to day, paired up with a T-shirt and one of the show’s necklaces, created with Matis by jewellery designer Karen McFarlane and replete with fur and glittering balls and chains and gleaming black beads.

Toronto Fashion Week: Andy Thê-Anh’s darker take on tango
Last night, a big crowd came out to support Montreal designer Andy Thê-Anh–the front row was filled with all the clients who will pick up pieces from his tango-inspired fall collection at one of Thê-Anh’s two Toronto boutiques. Patricia Gajo caught the collection when it walked in Montreal in February. Read the review here and see the full collection after the jump.

Toronto Fashion Week: Crystal Renn and Kirsten Owen lead the charge at Joe Fresh
The Joe Fresh Style show is always a crowd pleaser. Flying in top models (Crystal Renn and Kirsten Owen), debuting the new single from Shawn Desman and filling the front row with local celebs and socialites gave the show must-see buzz. While the last few seasons at Joe have shown crystal clear messages on the runway, last night’s presentation was more of a mash-up of fall’s hottest trends. With fun fur, military, sweatpants, and schoolboy, the show had much more of as street-style focus. Piece by piece, there were lots of lust-haves. Tricked-out biker boots, chain-strap bags, puffy jackets and all of the faux fur bits are sure to be big hits once they hit Loblaw and Real Canadian Superstores in a few months, but the show missed the cult caché of the past few seasons.

Toronto Fashion Week: Yes, we are suckers for Sears Attitude
Okay, we’ll admit it: We’re suckers for Sears’ in-house label Attitude. Why? Well, let’s take their recent Fall 2010 line-up of sumptuous camel toppers, high-waisted pencil skirts, peg leg trousers that boast paper-bag waists, day-to-night wool capes, bold-shouldered knits and sexy secretary print blouses. Then, there’s the extras: slick studded clutch bags, jet black heels […]

Toronto Fashion Week: Pink Tartan goes up in the air for fall
Judging from the biker jackets, boat loads of black, military toppers and slick leather dresses, the Fall 2010 Pink Tartan girl is one tough cookie. Designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran (who took her runway bow in skinny camo pants and matching peep-toe heels) struck the ideal balance of strong and soft with pieces, such as the rhinestone-encrusted […]

Toronto Fashion Week: Vancouver’s Angela Chen presents ’80s-inspired staples at Orange
Angela Chen knows her girl—a straight-ahead, no fuss, city dweller who wants to dress well but has no time or inclination to futz with her clothes. The palette for her Fall 2010 Orange collection was kept to a strict black, white (or off-white) and silver for instant wardrobe integration and the pieces were simple, with […]
