From the March 2013 issue: Kirsten Owen stars in our arty all-white photo shoot
See the March 2013 photo shoot starring Kirsten Owen »
In a season of 1990s resurgence, who better than grunge queen Kirsten Owen to star in our latest photo shoot? The British-born Canadian model lends her expert hand to our March 2013 trends issue photo shoot, which features a stark pure-white colour palette and some of Spring 2013’s best pieces from international and homegrown designers including Alexander Wang, Marni, Jeremy Laing and Greta Constantine. While white might be closer to the current colour of the ground than than anything in our current wardrobe, here’s another stoke in the hopeful fire of Spring 2013.

Milan Fashion Week: Leave it to Prada Fall 2013 to make the walk of shame look appealing
See runway photos from the Prada Fall 2013 show » On the day of a Prada show, little else seems to matter. The hours before Prada are spent anticipating what Miuccia will show. The hours after are spent ruminating on it. After shivering outside for half an hour we were finally allowed in to find […]

One fine photo: Photographed by Juergen Teller for FASHION’s September 2000 issue
“This candid shot of Kirsten Owen has a strong grunge feel to it. It’s the graffiti on the wall and the dirt on the ground, and her messy blonde hair and clothes are almost anti-fashion,” says FASHION’s current art director, Maarten Sluyter.
“As a model, she was always creating other people’s moments—photographers, stylists—and this image captures her moment, her five minutes spent by herself. She seems completely unguarded and happy. It’s really street photography before street photography became a trend. Now, we see photos of models off-duty all the time, but back then most people probably wouldn’t have recognized her so dressed down. It’s about feeling comfortable, looking exactly the way she wanted to.”

Montreal Fashion Week: The shows kick off with an androgynous ode at Marie Saint Pierre, an Andrej Pejic–inspired runway appearance at DUY and more
I started Montreal Fashion Week with a major misstep; I missed the Tavãn & Mitto show. But Dressed to Kill’s EIC, Stéphane Le Duc, raved about T&M’s expert cuts and the luxurious repositioning of the brand—also how they’re going to sell exclusively from their boutique. It’s an interesting move that seems in line with the city’s growing niche market of quality and made-to-measure garments. As for the clothes, I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
Hours before, I had received an early-bird Tweet from stylist Cary Tauben that he’d be styling DUY’s runway. “Get ready for a couture show,” he wrote, dropping a few crumbs about a “surprise.” Indeed, Duy Nguyen delivered a very haute-lifting experience. The Parisienne Madame focus was clear; the rich urban palette was solid. The “surprise” was Tauben himself, who—in an obvious Andrej Pejic–inspired move—strut his bare, model-esque legs beneath a fur-collared coat down the stage to rippling applause.

Behind the scenes with Rad Hourani and Kirsten Owen in Montreal
Rad Hourani was recently home in Montreal between jaunts to Paris and New York City to shoot his Spring 2012 look book and video. I popped by his all-white Mile End atelier to find him perched in all black behind two tripods—both focused on the iconic model Kirsten Owen, who drove in from Toronto that morning.
Alternating between Ice Queen and Alien, Owen quietly unravelled before the lens, each flash igniting a fierce thunder in her eyes. Between takes, Hourani and I chatted about his personal inspiration. I discovered his name Rad means “thunder” in Arabic and “clothing” (how serendipitous) in an African language. The designer also added, “Le Rad in Paris is the last bar of the night that is open—a cool bar. It’s not trendy.” If you know anything about Hourani’s avant-garde philosophy, you know it’s not a stretch to make the connection. And, well, I don’t think I have to tell you what “rad” means in English. Here are more snapshots of our conversation.

My Style: Industry veteran Kirsten Owen talks Joe Fresh, art and her proudest modelling moments
Kirsten Owen‘s turn on the Fall 2010 Joe Fresh Style catwalk was one of our favourite moments of LG Fashion Week. We sat down with the poster girl of ’90s grunge models (think Helmut Lang and CK One) to talk favourite cities, model heros and moving back to Canada:
At 40, you’ve walked runways for over 20 years and been in campaigns for Helmut Lang, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs. Which job are you most proud of?
“I loved Helmut Lang, and the Emanuel Ungaro shoot with the dog—it’s one of my favourites. That was with Mario Sorrenti.”You also did a campaign for Lida Baday.
“Yeah, I loved that work. Chris Nicholls doing that was amazing because they embraced my ‘real-ness,’ and they didn’t want me to look like a model or be like anything that would be expected, you know.” -

Toronto Fashion Week: Crystal Renn and Kirsten Owen lead the charge at Joe Fresh
The Joe Fresh Style show is always a crowd pleaser. Flying in top models (Crystal Renn and Kirsten Owen), debuting the new single from Shawn Desman and filling the front row with local celebs and socialites gave the show must-see buzz. While the last few seasons at Joe have shown crystal clear messages on the runway, last night’s presentation was more of a mash-up of fall’s hottest trends. With fun fur, military, sweatpants, and schoolboy, the show had much more of as street-style focus. Piece by piece, there were lots of lust-haves. Tricked-out biker boots, chain-strap bags, puffy jackets and all of the faux fur bits are sure to be big hits once they hit Loblaw and Real Canadian Superstores in a few months, but the show missed the cult caché of the past few seasons.
