Model Muses of FASHION Through the Decades
This November marks FASHION’s 40th birthday. We wanted to celebrate the models who inspired us during the past four decades from the big hair and shoulder pads of jet-setting supermodel Marley Crosby to supermodels Daria Werbowy and Coco Rocha. We asked some of our models and contributors to share their favourite memories from these shoots. Read their musings […]

The best of Spring 2015 fashion ads: 36 of the top campaign images so far
The temperature may be taking a dip, but a warmer season doesn’t seem far in the distance thanks to the many Spring 2015 fashion ads surfacing these past couple of months. We already talked about Jennifer Lawrence looking absolutely stunning in a collection of portraits for Dior and Madonna (abs and all) as the face […]

Paris Fashion Week: Jean Paul Gaultier’s fierce muse for Fall 2013
See Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2013 collection photos » Exquisitely tailored leathers, patchwork fur and punky toupées (that coiffed the models with wild two-tone hair): all the ingredients you might expect from a Jean Paul Gaultier show and then some. The stage at Place Wagram was set like a Broadway production of Chicago; a double-tiered […]

Milan Fashion Week: Leave it to Prada Fall 2013 to make the walk of shame look appealing
See runway photos from the Prada Fall 2013 show » On the day of a Prada show, little else seems to matter. The hours before Prada are spent anticipating what Miuccia will show. The hours after are spent ruminating on it. After shivering outside for half an hour we were finally allowed in to find […]

Check out Miu Miu’s Resort 2013 campaign
Who can get Hilary Rhoda, Caroline Trentini, Jessica Stam, Karen Elson, Sung Hee, Daphne Groeneveld, and Candice Swanepoel modeling in a room together? Miuccia Prada can.
In the Miu Miu Resort 2013 campaign and look book, the model A-team took to a brocade curtained room that resembles a grandmother’s house and, you know, they modeled.

Exclusive: We talk with Lady Gaga about Fame, fragrance and why being from New York makes her scent the best (Plus: 16 photos of celebs at the Fame launch party!)
See all the party photos from the Fame launch in New York! »
Masks, tattoos and Mother Monster asleep on a couch. The party for Lady Gaga’s new fragrance, Fame ($59, thebay.com), was indeed unlike any other perfume launch. But hours before she hosted a masquerade ball at New York’s Guggenheim that brought out the A-list (Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang) and the WTF List (Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton), Lady Gaga was wide awake to talk to FASHION about her post-sex rituals (pizza and a movie!), what the colour black means to her and why being a New Yorker makes her pop star perfume better than other celeb scents.
For someone who hasn’t yet smelled Fame, can you describe your fragrance?
“It’s very sexual, it’s very addictive, but it is very chic. The metaphor of the bottle is that when you spray this product, all the good things about fame come out, and all the bad things stay inside. So when you buy this perfume, you can have the lovely smell of it, [while] I’ll be dealing with all the bullshit inside.” -
New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: The secret behind Jessica Stam’s new raven-coloured hair
Backstage at Rodarte, I bumped into former FASHION cover girl Jessica Stam, who opened the show. I almost didn’t recognize her because of her raven hair, which she switched to a few months ago for the Met’s Schiaparelli and Prada exhibit. The shade really seemed to suit the “modern medieval” look and severe side parts Odile Gilbert crafted to appear as though models had shaved one half of their head. “I did it [again] a week ago,” Stam said of her new colour, leaving out the part about it being a cover up for a dye job gone wrong.

From the food aisles to Fifth Avenue: Inside Joe Fresh’s New York flagship store and opening party
Last Thursday, the unthinkable happened: A brand born in the aisles of the grocery store became part of the glorious gloss of New York’s Fifth Avenue. But if you know anything about Joe Fresh and its founder Joe Mimran, you know that well, it’s not really that unthinkable at all. Since launching the brand five years ago (and after years of style-propagation via his previous ventures, Club Monaco and Caban), Mimran has brought affordable chicness to the forefront of the Canadian fashion industry. South of the border was the natural next step, and since the brand’s U.S. launch late last summer, its bright and sunny hues have been infiltrating the pages of Teen Vogue, New York Magazine and the like. To boot, the brand has been making its mark on the arts community as well, sponsoring an event during Miami’s Art Basel, and the New Museum’s second triennial exhibit, The Ungovernables.

Hundred-dollar bills and Dalmatian-printed Minx: See Vogue Italia’s blingtastic nail art up close!
See all of nail stylist Lisa Logan’s behind-the-scenes pictures! »
The hotly anticipated Haute Mess editorial from Vogue Italia dropped today and it’s a glitter lover and nail-art fanatic’s dream. Photographed by Steven Meisel, the shoot includes some of the most familiar faces in modeling. But thanks to makeup artist Pat McGrath and hairstylist Jimmy Paul, it takes a keen eye to identify Joan Smalls, Jessica Stam, Karen Elson, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Lindsey Wixson, Daphne Groeneveld, Guinevere van Seenus, and Coco Rocha underneath the wigs, gemstones, and pencil-thin eyebrows.

One fine photo: Jessica Stam, photographed by Gabor Jurina for FASHION’s February 2005 issue
“There’s something extremely appealing about Jessica Stam’s red hair, electric blue eyes and red lips; they stand out against the white background,” says art director Maarten Sluyter, who joined FASHION in February 2011. “The lighting is so soft and fresh, like a Sunday morning when you’re just waking up and there’s no rush to get out of bed. It makes me think of Marilyn Monroe’s last photo shoot; Stam has captured that same feeling of desire and vulnerability. Because there’s very little fashion in this shot, it has a timeless quality. I could see this photo a hundred times and never get tired of it.”

TFW diary: All the action from last night’s Mercedes-Benz Start Up competition
View the runway photo gallery »
View the runway video »If there’s one main takeaway message from fashion week, it’s that we must recognize, foster, and promote our home-grown talent so that it can grow both here and abroad. With this in mind, the inaugural Mercedes-Benz Start Up competition was held last night, and up for grabs was a year of mentorship from industry leaders (including us at FASHION!) to kick-start a fledgling collection. After a rigorous selection process (preliminary competitions, meetings, tense deliberations) the short list was whittled down to Cassie Dee, Martin Lim, Travis Taddeo, Triarchy, and UNTTLD, and united in Toronto for a runway showdown. Short video montages introduced each designer, their vision, and their inspiration for the coming season. We saw a dark, leather-laced collection (UNTTLD), a western-inspired line (Cassie Dee), a denim parade (Triarchy), some disheveled streetwear (Travis Taddeo), and bright billowy silks (Martin Lim). After a brief designer bow, a surprisingly flustered Jessica Stam took to the podium to announce the winner. Drumroll please… Husband and wife team Pao Lim and Danielle Martin of Martin Lim! Now comes the real hard work—keeping our promises and making sure they get the attention they deserve! Stay tuned for the duo’s wears in an upcoming issue of FASHION.
