In honour of International Women’s Day, we dug up a collection of honest, bold and inspirational quotes by some of our favourite women in the past pages of FASHION. Here’s an Accessory Trend That Won’t Cost You a Fortune
Designer Joseph Altuzarra has changed my mind. At his Fall 2018 show in Paris, I sat next to the most beautiful French woman I’ve ever seen, and just like that, I finally understood why so many people worship French-girl style. The woman in question looked like a Pinterest pin come to life. She wore dark […]

’90s FASHION: the Era of Canada’s Supermodels
’90s fashion is back in more ways than one. Yes, we have a renewed sense of appreciation for menswear, velvet, chokers and slip dresses, but fashion is also rediscovering the supermodel. Before celebrity models like Kendall, Karlie and Kaia there was Kate, Christy, Cindy and Naomi. We reconnected with our former team members to talk […]

Model Muses of FASHION Through the Decades
This November marks FASHION’s 40th birthday. We wanted to celebrate the models who inspired us during the past four decades from the big hair and shoulder pads of jet-setting supermodel Marley Crosby to supermodels Daria Werbowy and Coco Rocha. We asked some of our models and contributors to share their favourite memories from these shoots. Read their musings […]

The Fashion Girl’s Guide to Skateboarding
In the 1995 movie Clueless, protagonist Cher Horowitz makes no bones about her disdain for the skateboarding boys at her high school. She laments their baggy pants, their backwards caps and how it “looks like they just fell out of bed.” Back then, it would have been impossible to see someone like the Alaïa-clad fashionista […]

The rise of the fashion piercing: From septum rings to multiple brow hoops, how much is too much?
Think back to Spring 2012 Couture week, when Givenchy wowed us with those memorable, over-the-top septum piercings—oversized nose rings in mixed metals, dripping with decorative chains and diamonds. Everything was overstated: heavy beading, mixed metals and hardware, and a combination of animal skins and velvets. Big hair and bright makeup accompanied the look, naturally. In the […]

How Daria Werbowy spends her time back home in Toronto (hint: being super chill)
In a modelling world dominated by Gigi, Kendall and Cara, there’s Daria Werbowy. The 32-year-old supe, who we can smugly call our country’s own (the Mississauga-raised model has been on our cover nine times) will never dominate any of your feeds. She only joined Instagram so that her family could keep tabs on her, and […]

Is 2015 the year of armpit hair? See the celebs who let it grow
A photo posted by Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus) on May 1, 2015 at 12:15pm PDT If 2014 was the year that bush came back, then 2015 is ostensibly the year of axillary hair. In January, New York-based photographer Cass Bird posted a portrait on Instagram of Daria Werbowy with armpit hair. By April, Miley Cyrus was […]

Not just for selfies: Instagram ad campaigns are taking over the fashion world
See the best Instagram ad campaigns »
You cannot deny the fact that fashion and Instagram are a match made in heaven (honestly, what did we even do before the photo-sharing app?). It’s hard to believe that in just a few years Instagram has gone from a platform for designer houses to tease their ad campaigns (all hail Oscar de la Renta/OscarPRGirl) to a space for open casting calls for aspiring models all around the world, as well as a place for brands to seriously hype us up with upcoming collaboration news (like H&M x Alexander Wang). With designer brands and magazines sharing insider scoop, ad campaigns and magazine covers launching on Instagram and of course, us fashion diehards on our phones 24/7, Instagram has quickly become an integral part of a fashion campaign. While it’s getting harder and harder to stand out from the sea of designer labels, there are some cases where a design house stumbles upon a stroke of social media genius and ups the ante on the Instagram fashion game, blowing us all away.

Moody, botanical and a little bit Canadian: welcome to Balenciaga for Spring 2014. Toronto supermodel Daria Werbowy fronts the Steven Klein-shot ad campaign and it’s safe to say the images are A+.
Slated to debut in print next month, the campaign’s first image shows Werbowy at peace, leaning against a white wall engulfed in botanical vines. The others showcase the supermodel sporting the brand’s crop-driven Spring 2014 collection pieces. “I wanted to convey a sense of strength and knowingness,” said Balenciaga creative director Alexander Wang. “Daria is definitely not naïve.” With a gaze as powerful as hers, these ads will surely stop onlookers dead in their tracks.

FASHION Magazine October 2013 cover: Daria Werbowy
In an industry where models come and go as quickly as trends, Daria Werbowy has managed to keep busy and relevant. Gracing FASHION’s cover for the ninth time, the Polish-born, Toronto-bred beauty brings her signature sizzle to the camera, sporting a Christopher Kane dress with the kind of freshness and energy that you typically see in a new name. At 29, she says she may feel as young as when she was first discovered but her whole outlook on life has changed considerably. Below, features editor Elio Iannacci offers a sneak peek at her cover story.
On her relationship with fashion and decor:
“Ever since I was in high school, I was interested in design. I kept changing my room around all the time. I think design has an important role in our surroundings, our personalities and our way of life.”
