Model Muses of FASHION Through the Decades
This November marks FASHION’s 40th birthday. We wanted to celebrate the models who inspired us during the past four decades from the big hair and shoulder pads of jet-setting supermodel Marley Crosby to supermodels Daria Werbowy and Coco Rocha. We asked some of our models and contributors to share their favourite memories from these shoots. Read their musings […]

From the March issue: We take spring’s boho trend for a spin with model Liisa Winkler
If the start of last Paris Fashion Week—groups of lithe models splayed out on the grass runway at Dries Van Noten—was any indication, Spring 2015 is going to be all about easy breezy vibes. And in this photo shoot from our March issue, model Liisa Winkler channels that ’70s spirit wearing patchwork and prints, floaty […]

Street Style, Toronto: 18 gorgeous shots of the shiny, pretty things outside fashion week’s spring shows
See the street style shots from Toronto »
On the second day of pre-fashion week aka The Shows, Toronto’s best were out in full force to support last night’s talented twosome, Steven Tai and Jeremy Laing. October’s pleasant temps seem to be allowing for pleasant outfit pairings (read: no bulky layers or cold weather grimaces), which we obviously dig. Style Panel’s Danielle Roche pre-empted Spring 2014’s shine trend in a boxy copper animal print, which was layered, overtop a pleated black leather mini and op art print turtleneck. Caillianne Beckerman, Samantha Beckerman and all star model Liisa Winkler were feeling the current plaid penchant, weaving the old standby within matching designer-clad outfits. Meanwhile team Holt Renfrew had the sophisticated clan colours downpat, with Blaire Borins, Jennifer Daubney, Kimberly Grabel and Moira Wright posing in co-ordinating neutrals. Until next time folks, which by our count is just over a week away.

Milan Fashion Week: Leave it to Prada Fall 2013 to make the walk of shame look appealing
See runway photos from the Prada Fall 2013 show » On the day of a Prada show, little else seems to matter. The hours before Prada are spent anticipating what Miuccia will show. The hours after are spent ruminating on it. After shivering outside for half an hour we were finally allowed in to find […]

One fine photo: Photographed by Monic Richard for FASHION’s November 1994 issue
“This photo captures the essence of spring: everything is vibrant and new,” says Maarten Sluyter, FASHION’s current art director. “You can almost smell the fresh air. The model featured, Liisa Winkler, studied ballet, and she brings an air of elegance and spontaneity to this shot. Her pose evokes a sense of playfulness and highlights the voluminous skirt. I love that her hair isn’t perfectly in place; it goes with the natural setting and seems to mirror the leafy trees. This is what living in the moment looks like.”

TFW diary: A cavalcade of Canadian models and covetable ’60s-inspired styles at Joe Fresh

View the runway video »When it comes to fashion, I have two minds. I oscillate between editor mode (carefully scrutinizing trends, fabrics, cuts, and colour) and shopping autopilot (dreaming up outfits, making must-have lists, and slowly building my dream closet). Last night’s Joe Fresh show threw me for a loop. While I was technically there for work, I couldn’t pry myself away from my material side. Not only did the presentation of the show blow me away—Joe flew in the who’s who of Canadian models as well as used some of the beauties who’ve been in town for the week including Alana Zimmer, Kate King, Heather Marks, Herieth Paul, Kristin Owen, Liisa Winkler, Tara Gill, Yasmin Warsame, Kori Richardson, and Amanda Laine—but the clothes have never looked so… expensive (a coup for a mass-retail brand). Perfectly fitting tight jersey tees, pointed loafer pumps, and a printed ankle pant all got the green light in my mental notes. The clever combination of clean ‘60s minimalism (the show opened with a Mondrian-esque shift dress) with sportwear-detailed separates (neoprene, parachute fabrics, and drawstring details were everywhere) ensured the show didn’t feel one-noted. While they certainly won’t alienate their core grocery-store customer, Joe certainly upped the ante for the fashion followers who will be anxiously awaiting the runway styles come spring.

TFW diary: Jean Pierre Braganza brings dizzying geometrics back to Canada

View the runway video »Bringing a bit of math class to the runway, London-based Montreal-born designer Jean Pierre Braganza showed so many dizzying geometric variations at Friday’s Ritz Carlton show that our heads were spinning (the good way, not The Exorcist way). Opening the show with FASHION favourite Liisa Winkler, the show included metal-dotted, hexagon-printed, revealingly slashed, beaded night-time dresses, pantsuits, and blazers that were done up in so many unique ways and we could see them being worn by many interesting ladies (we’ve personally witnessed the multitude of uptown, downtown, and arty types that visit Queen Street West’s Carte Blanche specifically requesting his wears). While Carte Blanche is currently Braganza’s only Canadian stockist, we’ll bet that the list will getting longer after Friday’s strong showing.

We’re kvelling! Five-time FASHION cover girl Liisa Winkler kills it in the new Balenciaga ads
We’re kvelling over here. Belleville-born beauty and five-time FASHION cover girl Liisa Winkler has landed one of our favourite new campaigns: the Steven Meisel–photo’d Balenciaga Fall 2011 shots. Featuring Winkler alongside fellow model Julia Nobis swathed in the season’s angular colour-blocked pieces, the shots juxtapose the setting of the Gothic arches of a Harlem church with sterile black-and-white bathroom tiles. “I met with Nicolas in New York and he booked me ‘exclusive’ for his show in Paris. Soon after, I shot the campaign in New York with Steven,” says Winkler. “It was so nice to work with such a great team again. After being out of the industry for the past few years raising my kids, I feel more solid in my own skin and more able to fully appreciate and understand all the creative direction that goes into a shoot like this.”
To boot, she is also featured in the just-released behind-the-scenes video of the shoot filmed by model Karen Elson and is seen in many of the, like, zillion photos that are included on the relaunched Balenciaga website. You go, homegirl!
