How To Style Denim for Summer With the Beckerman Twins
It’s a Thursday evening and I’ve descended into the bowels of the Eaton Centre for the grand opening of Levi’s new Canadian flagship store. Hawk-like security guards patrol the store’s perimeter, but inside the party is bumpin’, as trays of cheeseburger sliders and boxes of Maker pizza wind their way through the packed crowd. I’m […]

How to make money from your closet: The insider’s guide to consignment, swapping and more
When Stephanie Mark moved to a new apartment last fall, she was forced to finally tackle a major project on her to-do list: “Clean out closet.” As co-founder of The Coveteur, Toronto-based Mark makes a living peeking inside the closets of others, but in rummaging through her own, she came face-to-face with more than a few ghosts of shopping sprees past. In fact, her closet cleanse unearthed an entire wardrobe’s worth of designer items no longer in rotation: a pair of Jimmy Choo flats, an Isabel Marant dress, a Ferragamo snakeskin iPad case. “I even discovered a pair of Proenza Schouler suede boots that I never wore—not once,” she admits with equal parts amusement and shame. Faced with a monstrous pile of barely worn designer labels, Mark decided to try her luck at consignment. She made $1,000 in three months.
Most of us have been in Mark’s position before. Who hasn’t spent what feels like a month’s salary on a pair of killer heels only to realize they’re literally killing your feet? Onto the top shelf they go, never to be seen—or worn—again. And then there’s the printed dress you couldn’t resist at the store but pass over every morning when it’s time to get dressed—it just hangs in your closet, tag still on. In her 2012 book, You Are What You Wear, psychologist Jennifer Baumgartner writes that only 20 per cent of the clothing in an average person’s closet is worn on a regular basis. That’s a lot of unworn clothes taking up much-needed space and, as Mark puts it, “making zero dollars.” Which explains why she and other in-the-know fashion professionals are increasingly finding ways to cash in on their closets.
“It’s a great way to purchase new pieces and keep up with the trends each season without having to live in a box on the street,” jokes Mark, who put her recent earnings toward a Christopher Kane dress she’s been wearing non-stop. Her pieces (69 in total) went to LAB Consignment, a high-end showroom in Toronto where owner Lauren Baker sells everything from Louis Vuitton handbags to Marc Jacobs cashmere hats (profits are split 50/50 with consignors).

Street Style, New York: 53 photos of style stars (and Barbara Walters!) braving the heat outside Spring 2014 fashion week
Despite the scorching heat wave, street style regulars were definitely into leather on day six of New York Fashion Week Spring 2014.
Many fashion enthusiasts layered classic leather jackets or vests over their summery outfits, but Miroslava Duma and blogger Chiara Ferragni rocked the leather trend by pulling out maxi and studded mini respectively.
The Beckerman sisters joined in on the leather-clad fun. While Samantha Beckerman opted for a pleated black skirt and a Marc Jacobs Mickey Mouse sweater, Cailliane went rocker chic in a Rodarte black and red-fringed leather vest and Mickey printed leggings. Style to spare in duplicates, those girls.
Accessories were definitely making a statement on the streets. From Leandra Medine’s colourful arm candy to a furry black and blue clutch adding texture to a head to toe black ensemble, accessories were stealing the spotlight. Even the much-coveted mini Chanel hula-hoop purse made an appearance.
While the vast majority strutted the streets outside New York Fashion Week in killer heels, flats, sneakers and furry Céline sandals were the popular and definitely more comfortable choice. Even Anna Dello Russo, the queen of statement stilettos, wore leather boots, albeit bejewelled and bedazzled.

Inside the SMUT Soirée: 15 photos of Toronto’s fashionable set getting the celebrity lowdown with Lainey Gossip
See the party photos from SMUT Soirée Toronto »
There’s basically two ways to keep up with celebrity gossip: Through the tabloids or through Lainey Gossip. Both are gratifying, but Lainey’s generally the only one telling the truth—her smart brand of gossip is all about the reasons behind why we hear the stories we do about celebrities. Needless to say, Lainey Gossip devotees are a dedicated bunch, which led to the creation of the SMUT Soirée: an annual event where Lainey goes even deeper with her Hollywood intel to reveal blind items, answer gossip questions and more. What started as a Toronto-only event is now a cross-Canada tour, with last night’s Toronto stop being the city’s eighth SMUT Soirée.

If there were an award for Toronto’s most fashionable twins, Samantha and Caillianne Beckerman would win it year after year. The identical duo’s love for a kaleidoscopic magpie blend of designer duds has not only become a staple on the Toronto fashion scene, but on the web as well, where they boast a cool 44,000 Instagram fans. To boot, the sisters are H&M’s official fashion bloggers and have previously collaborated with Coach, Aldo, Bulgari and Teen Vogue, just to name a few. So, how do they do it? The Beckerman sisters really seem to have fun with fashion. Definitive subscribers of a “more is more” sensibility, the duo are constantly dressing up for each other on their blog Beckerman Bite Plate and well, we just can’t get enough. The twins let us inside their fabulous Mary Poppins bags for a peek at what they carry with them on a daily basis.
