Toronto shop notes: The wedge
When it comes to matters of the feet, designers like Marc Jacobs (at Louis Vuitton) and Hannah MacGibbon (at Chloé) took a step in a similar direction this season.

Joe Mimran’s Barbie look-alike doll even sports velvet slippers
*Sigh* Why must companies tease us by trotting out cult-y items that we want to own, but cannot actually buy? Case in point: Joe Mimran just had a Ken doll made in his image to celebrate Joe Fresh Style’s current line of Barbie merch. The doll has Mimran’s signature hair and is dressed in his signature blazer and open collar shirt and his signature velvet slippers complete with their signature crest. It’s so covetable. And so one-of-a-kind. Boo.

The daily steal: Makeup palette, $20
The beauty of the makeup palette is in its efficient packaging. This set from Joe Fresh ($20, joe.ca) packs four eyeshadows, a lipstick, a gloss, a brush and a bronzer into a slender folder that can be easily tucked away in your desk or clutch and brandished when a holiday party face is urgently required.

The daily steal: Sequined sweater, $59
When I was in Vancouver checking out Joe Fresh Style’s sleek new Granville Street flagship, I picked up this camel and gold sequined sweater ($59, joe.ca). At the grand opening party I got so many compliments that I was literally directing people toward the rack of sparkly jumpers. (You can also get it in grey […]

Q&A: Joe Mimran talks about the first Joe Fresh flagship
Hanging out with Irina Lazareanu is what I call a Saturday night well spent. And this is how last weekend played out, when Joe Mimran rolled into town to celebrate the opening of the country’s first freestanding Joe Fresh Style flagship (540 Granville St., 604-681-4200, joe.ca). With him? A handful of Toronto media, Loblaws executives, musicians from Marianas Trench, Divine Brown, The Stereos and Sweet Thing (who gave a free, afternoon street concert to screaming fans), DJ Mia Moretti and electro-violinist Caitlin Moe, and of course, the models—Irina, Arlenis Sosa and Tiiu Kuik. Here’s what he had to say about the store.

Beauty notes: Amped-up lashes at Joe Fresh Style
By Andrea Victory
“I want it to look as if she did it herself,” was Joe Fresh Style founder Joe Mimran’s directive L’Oréal Paris official hair artist and colourist, Eric Del Monaco, for the tailored yet slightly undone buns seen Wednesday night on the Spring 2011 runway. The hair was combed back “nice and clean and flat,” says Del Monaco. It’s then roughed up with product before being twirled into a bun that sat under the crown and above the nape of the neck. The ‘do was then rustled up gently for a classic spring look.
Official makeup artist for L’Oréal Paris Eddie Malter’s makeup mantra for the show was “a lot a lot a lot of mascara.” He directed his team to amp up model’s lashes, even going so far as to break open a tube of mascara to get the maximum amount of product. Malter used the straight end of a disposable wand to add layer upon layer onto the roots. A base of “beautiful skin, nothing on the eyelid, just balm on lips,” kept the spotlight on the lashes.

Toronto Fashion Week: Our shopping list from last night’s Joe Fresh show
Last night, Toronto Fashion Week’s biggest show (both in audience and number of looks–51), Joe Fresh Style, came down the runway, lead by two of the brand’s campaign stars, Tiiu Kuik and Arlenis Sosa. (The pair made an appearance in Vancouver this past Saturday to celebrate the opening of Joe’s first free-standing store.) In keeping with Joe Fresh’s grocery store roots, we’ve compiled a list of what we’ll be shopping for when the spring merch hits stores.

The daily steal: Purple nail polish, $4
Nail polish shades have lately produced a kind of cultish frenzy. New shades appear and we all hanker to try them, or we inquire enviously when we spot an especially cool shade on a coworkers toes. When these Joe Fresh Beauty ($4 each, joe.ca) polishes arrived on my desk, I seized immediately on the purple […]

My Style: Industry veteran Kirsten Owen talks Joe Fresh, art and her proudest modelling moments
Kirsten Owen‘s turn on the Fall 2010 Joe Fresh Style catwalk was one of our favourite moments of LG Fashion Week. We sat down with the poster girl of ’90s grunge models (think Helmut Lang and CK One) to talk favourite cities, model heros and moving back to Canada:
At 40, you’ve walked runways for over 20 years and been in campaigns for Helmut Lang, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs. Which job are you most proud of?
“I loved Helmut Lang, and the Emanuel Ungaro shoot with the dog—it’s one of my favourites. That was with Mario Sorrenti.”You also did a campaign for Lida Baday.
“Yeah, I loved that work. Chris Nicholls doing that was amazing because they embraced my ‘real-ness,’ and they didn’t want me to look like a model or be like anything that would be expected, you know.” -
The daily steal: Fruit-scented soap, $2
If the phrase “guest soaps” conjures up an image of hard pastel roses and seashells collecting dust in the loo, these fruit-coloured (and scented) cuties from Joe Fresh Beauty ($2 each, joe.ca) will provide a fresh alternative.

The daily steal: Printed dress, $29
I love the print on this sparky little cotton dress (with a little spandex for stretch) from Joe Fresh Style ($29, joe.ca)—it reminds me in an abstract way of a cool English garden in full summer bloom.
