We Spoke With Iris van Herpen About Envisioning the Future of Femininity
Iris van Herpen’s fantastical designs live just beyond the border of imagination. The 34-year-old Dutch designer draws inspiration from subjects as esoteric and varied as biopiracy and synesthesia and gravitates toward technology on the vanguard of scientific innovation to inform her creations. And yet because her work is so forward-thinking, it is often misunderstood. We […]

Architect Philip Beesley on his Friendship with Iris van Herpen
If you haven’t heard of Philip Beesley before, here’s a crash course. He’s a 61-year-old Canadian architect and professor at the University of Waterloo, whose body of work involves the creation of transgressive, sentient structures — which is just as weird as it sounds. He also happens to be one of Iris Van Herpen’s closest […]

Inside Big Bang Bash: 20 photos from the surreal Viktor & Rolf Dolls party at the ROM
See Big Bang Bash Viktor & Rolf Dolls Luminato photos »
Last Saturday night, the arty A-list gathered to celebrate the opening of the Viktor & Rolf Dolls exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. As the pre-emptive kick-off to the Luminato arts festival, which officially begins today, patrons, planners and performers came out en masse including the formidable foreign trio of Marina Abramović, Willem Dafoe and creative director Jörn Weisbrodt. To match the quirky aesthetic of the night’s satellite guests of honour (the designers were unable to repeat their May visit to Toronto), the ROM’s crystal lobby was tricked out with curiously interactive decorations like a sky-high mannequin whose dress gave out jewellery when guests placed their hands inside, a conveyor belt of treats and a literal piano bar which thrilled with its makeshift Prohibition vibe. Everything about the event seemed as if part of a surreal dream, which culminated in the fabulously fringed navy coat belonging to a one Suzanne Boyd catching on fire. With a few ceremonious pats, the fire was extinguished, leaving the glitzy gossipers with something especially titillating to talk about.

The Weekend To-Do: We’re hitting up Toronto’s new J.Crew factory store, Halifax’s Group of Seven exhibit and more
With fall party season in full swing—as perfectly demonstrated at last night’s Hermès swinging silk party in Toronto—our dance cards are more packed than ever. This weekend we’re taking in masterpieces of the Canadian and French varietals, trying some designer eyewear on for size (and shape) and having a vintage-style one night stand. Find out […]

October 2012: Letter from the editor
The speed with which Carly Rae Jepsen has shot to stardom has been positively meteoric. Between the time we started discussing a cover and the actual shoot, she became a household name. Jepsen was tailed by paparazzi when she arrived at the Vancouver studio where Gabor Jurina was set up to photograph her; features editor Elio Iannacci had to post gatekeepers at the door to keep them at bay.
But the singer couldn’t have been more sweet, and eagerly explored her sexy side in a body-con McQ by Alexander McQueen dress and leopard-spotted Louboutin pumps. “Whenever Gabor showed her which angles were working best for her, she was happy to go back and perfect the pose,” says stylist Zeina Esmail.
Photography is always a collaborative effort, notes Bryan Adams, another Canadian singing superstar. Adams discusses his portraits of Mick Jagger, Daphne Guinness, Amy Winehouse and Lana Del Rey in “Northern Exposure” (page 164). We are left with the impression that despite his fame and fortune, Adams is an artist at heart. This is one VIP parent we can’t imagine buying Dior for his 18-month-old.
But, as Shawna Cohen reports in “Little Luxuries” (page 70), many celebs do. “If the kids look good, they look good. Almost as an accessory,” comments a boutique owner who stocks Lanvin flats from size 2 years. What’s next? Designer diapers?

The Weekend To-Do: Toronto gets a pop-up shop brunch, new music from Edmonton makes us swoon and don’t forget about the Olympics, of course!
Plippity-ploppity goes the rain, and pippity-poppity goes the shopping. This weekend, when we’re not watching designer-clad athletes dodge raindrops in London, we’re checking out temporary shops across the country. Popping up in unlikely locales, get your wardrobe fix everywhere from frescoed-in-spray-paint back alleys to restaurants best known for their house-music brunch service. But who wants house music when you have the latest band from Edmonton on your Rdio?

The culture club: 6 tips for becoming an art collector
Collecting art can seem daunting, unapproachable and, in many cases, simply out of our reach. Yet, when you ask seasoned collectors how they started, many of them say that they bought their first piece in their 20s or 30s. So how to begin when you are young, working hard and have only a small amount of disposable income?
We asked a dear friend and avid art collector this question over a cup of coffee in Toronto. He provided us with the handy list below (and trust us when we say this is coming from a real expert):
