From the food aisles to a galaxy far, far away, Fall 2014’s fashion narrative is just as varied as the many women who’ll likely fall for its manifold charms.

Call it the Lorde effect (or blame it fashion’s ever-growing obsession with Game of Thrones), but designers across all four major fashion cities seemed to fall under the dark spell of moody heroines. At Dolce & Gabbana, dresses were made to scrape that forest floor. At Valentino, capes shrouded the wicked and at Rodarte and Preen, Star Wars prints were made for the modern day Princess Leia.

And while normcore may have mounted last season’s defence to street style’s increasing zaniness, Fall fashion 2014 is rife with ways to make statements. Flashbulbs will no doubt capture this season’s array of larger than life outerwear, from the utilitarian parkas on Alexander Wang’s robotic runway to Burberry’s painterly blanket coats. Meanwhile, fur was back with a brightly hued vengeance, ombréd at both Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, and in Crayola checks at Altuzarra. At Lanvin and Marni, fur was layered in wrap form over everything from short suits to sweatshirts.

This season’s accessories are especially light-hearted, with everything from a McDonalds Happy Meal to a carton of milk inspiring fall fashion 2014’s bags at Moschino and Chanel respectively. There were fur muffs at Tory Burch, crystal-incrusted snoods at Alexander McQueen and knee-highs á la Vivian Ward at Versace and sneakers once again staking their claim at Chanel.

If there ever were a time to pick your poison, it would be now.

Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone—it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.

Yesterday’s shows had several designers whose main business is evening wear and they’re hoping business will be blooming come fall. Giambattista Valli splashed hyper feminine blown out flowers across his short, stiff dresses. At Emanuel Ungaro, broken black roses had an almost X-ray quality. Elie Saab decorated floor length dresses with dark petals that looked as though they’d been captured through an Instagram filter to achieve that quality of colour saturation.

The other direction we’re seeing is playful optic prints. Stella McCartney used silk cording to create complex swirling patterns across her clothes. While not technically a print, she achieved the same effect as other designers like Acne and Kenzo, only with appliqué. Sacai, a brand known for trompe l’oeil techniques, layered geometric scarf prints to create interest. Finally, at Saint Laurent, Slimane splashed big bold dots across heavily sequined sixties-inspired dresses and toasty fur toppers.

There is tons of talk about fabric this season. Thick chunky knits are everywhere at Paris Fashion Week, with the knit pant quickly becoming a key piece for Fall 2014. Rich velvets in romantic shades of burgundy to soft rose have been spotted at Nina Ricci and Elie Saab. Sheer silk chiffons have revealed everything from legs and backs to arms and décolletage, and lace is cropping up in nearly every collection as a full-on feature or a just hint of sex appeal. With the end of fashion week in Toronto marking the close of Spring 2014 show season, it’s time we looked back at all the trends that emerged. As much as the runway sets the pace for what’s to come for the top Spring 2014 trends, the streets play a major role as show-going trendsetters give us the relatable breakdown of how to wear what’s hot next season. Prints take two spots on our top Spring 2014 trends list through those with a painterly quality and those influenced by international cultures. At Hérmes, Rousseau-inspired water lily florals were printed on luxurious fabrics while at Diane Von Furstenberg, dresses and skirts depicting an African wilderness roared. As for fashionable time travel, prepare to keep reminiscing about the youthful 1990s, which haven’t ceased to get reincarnated season after season. Designers like Rodarte, Balmain and Jason Wu have reinvented the decade’s essentials yet again. It’s the battle of the fashionable felines and the competition is fierce. Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards saw a solid mix of fashion hits and misses on the red carpet. And though it was hard to focus on anything other than Miley’s mini buns/butt, something about Katy Perry’s dress was giving us serious déjà vu. We soon realized that we’d seen her leopard-print Emanuel Ungaro look not once, but twice before. The gown was worn by Canadian model Coco Rocha at this year’s Met Gala, and more recently by our cover girl Olivia Wilde in FASHION’s September issue. Quelle scandal!

Rocha wore a floor-length version of the dress (that only a supermodel could pull off) to May’s annual Met Gala in New York. The thigh-high slit was refreshing, considering the gown’s high neck and long sleeves. The model completed the look with ankle boots and blunt bangs. Rocha had fun with her makeup opting for seriously dramatic eyes and bright pink cheeks. At the VMAs, Perry, who undoubtedly chose the print in celebration of her insta-hit “Roar,” paired the seriously embellished curve-hugging gown with black and gold sandals by Céline. Unlike Rocha, the singer let the dress do the talking (or the meowing) with minimal makeup and a high ponytail.

Makeup artists and hairstylists drew inspiration from girls hitting the summer music festival circuit with dishevelled, centre-parted strands and slept-in smoky eyes. Dsquared threw its own concert, sending models down the muddy runway with hippie hair that was “Kate Moss at Glastonbury,” explained hairstylist Sam Mc-Knight, while at Alexis Mabille, tiny daisies were tucked into textured hair for a Lilith Fair feel. At Emilio Pucci, makeup artist Lisa Butler’s roughly smudged black liner with hits of copper and gold paid homage to an ’80s Madonna, with a side of gypsy-esque free spirit. And when eyes weren’t rimmed in black, blue was the new black: For Emanuel Ungaro, Charlotte Tilbury gave eyes a wet look by mixing teal and navy with noir and layering gloss on top. Likewise at Rodarte, models wore a smoky eye with a spin; makeup maven James Kaliardos gave lids a navy wash that winked at Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night.

While many people apply polish to avoid biting their nails, I’m the other way around: my biggest motivation to stop picking, biting, and fidgeting was the dream of perfectly shaped long nails. The type that Mad Men’s Betty Draper wears, nail expert Sophy Robson obsesses over, and that designers, such as Emanuel Ungaro, have brought to the runway: oval- or almond-shaped and long! However, the conundrum with longer nails is that they really stand out when painted in bright or dark colours. Sure, taupes and beiges are on trend, but sometimes a girl just needs a pop of colour. Enter this week’s Nail Corner: two versions of the crescent moon manicure. Made popular by Ruffian in Fall 2010, this is an easy twist on the ever-popular moon manicure—it leaves the base of your nail bare and looks more like a reverse French tip than a half-moon.
