Another seven days of glamazons gliding down runways in immaculate designer creations has come again. Fall Fashion 2014: 231 photos of the top 10 trends of the season
See the entire Fall fashion 2014 trend report »
From the food aisles to a galaxy far, far away, Fall 2014’s fashion narrative is just as varied as the many women who’ll likely fall for its manifold charms.
Call it the Lorde effect (or blame it fashion’s ever-growing obsession with Game of Thrones), but designers across all four major fashion cities seemed to fall under the dark spell of moody heroines. At Dolce & Gabbana, dresses were made to scrape that forest floor. At Valentino, capes shrouded the wicked and at Rodarte and Preen, Star Wars prints were made for the modern day Princess Leia.
View by trend: DARK ROMANCE | SWEATER DRESSING | STATEMENT OUTERWEAR | RED, ORANGE & PINK | OPTIC PRINTS | FUR | MIDI SKIRT | UTILITY | SURFACE DETAIL | ACCESSORIES
And while normcore may have mounted last season’s defence to street style’s increasing zaniness, Fall fashion 2014 is rife with ways to make statements. Flashbulbs will no doubt capture this season’s array of larger than life outerwear, from the utilitarian parkas on Alexander Wang’s robotic runway to Burberry’s painterly blanket coats. Meanwhile, fur was back with a brightly hued vengeance, ombréd at both Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, and in Crayola checks at Altuzarra. At Lanvin and Marni, fur was layered in wrap form over everything from short suits to sweatshirts.
This season’s accessories are especially light-hearted, with everything from a McDonalds Happy Meal to a carton of milk inspiring fall fashion 2014’s bags at Moschino and Chanel respectively. There were fur muffs at Tory Burch, crystal-incrusted snoods at Alexander McQueen and knee-highs á la Vivian Ward at Versace and sneakers once again staking their claim at Chanel.
If there ever were a time to pick your poison, it would be now.

The Wizard of Oz is coming to a fashion week near you!
See all the designer sketches here »
For all you Wizard of Oz Mega Fans, September 4, 2014 is a date you are going to want to mark in your calendars. The film’s leading ladies will be transformed high-fashion-style for the film’s 75th Anniversary. Inspired by Dorothy, Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West (we know, we can hardly contain ourselves) Warner Bros. Consumer Products and The Wizard of Oz have teamed with US-based Tonner Doll Collection, plus various designers to create one-of-a-kind 22-inch couture dolls. If you’ve ever thought a green, warty witch couldn’t be glamorous, you’d better think again.
The Wizard of Oz has influenced fashion for decades, from Louis Vuitton’s Follow the Yellow Brick Road-esque dress to Christopher Kane’s rainbow dress of Spring ’14 to Kate Spade gingham pants, the list is endless. But never before have we seen something like this- a heap of our favorite designers re-imagining one of the most popular films of all time! The fashion and costume designers modernizing the looks of the celebrated characters include Trina Turk, Donna Karan, BCBG Max Azria, Chris Benz, Jenny Packham, Marc Jacobs, Betsey Johnson, Lyn Paolo, and Anna Sui– and if the sketches are any indication, this doll collection just may be as covetable as Dorothy’s ruby red slippers themselves. Using elements from the movie, such as Dorothy’s gingham pinafore and the infamous (however, essential) tornado, the designers combined some of today’s greatest styles, including a peplum jumpsuit and eclecticism, into the sketches.

Online Store of the Week: Violet Crown Vintage is our new favourite Texas-based and Toronto-born Etsy shop
Check out our top picks from Violet Crown Vintage »
The low down: After living the life of a freelance writer (and awesome street style photographer for us) in her hometown of Toronto, Lia Parsley and her husband moved down to Austin, Texas where she began her Etsy shop, Violet Crown Vintage in August of this year. Parsley’s interest in fashion, styling and vintage treasure hunting made her realize that she had a perfect opportunity to find and share some great pieces from a city that is known for having some of the best vintage clothing in the world.
Parsley did her research before they made the big move and found out that in the 1800s the city became known as the “City of the Violet Crown” because of the purple glow that appears over the hills and horizon after sunset during winter. “Twilight being my favorite time of day, I knew in the name ‘Violet Crown’ that I had a particular feeling I wanted to capture for the brand,” she says. And thus, a store that provides unique and timeless vintage pieces—that are still contemporary—was conceived.

They said/We said: Betsey Johnson may be bankrupt, but she’s still kicking
Betsey Johnson’s company sent the fashion world into a tizzy on Thursday, having filed for bankruptcy. But not to fret—the party is far from over for the legendarily perky designer. Despite having to close 63 freestanding stores, Johnson will stay on as creative director for the brand focusing on sportswear and her moderately priced line, among other projects.
Well, we wish we could say we didn’t see this coming, but the company was in deep water after a $48 million loan evasion that resulted in a bail out by Steve Madden (Steve Madden Ltd. owns intellectual property rights to the company). The Wall Street Journal explains that the brand’s luxe prices are simply not affordable to its younger demographic and could not compete with lower-priced retailers (H&M, Topshop) targeting the same customer base.
