There’s no time like the holiday season to bring on the bling in shiny metallics. On the runway, Marc Jacobs did it best in a gown (pictured above) laden with silver sequins. And for those other precious metals, we’re looking to Dolce & Gabbana, where tone-on-tone texture and all over patterns add a new dimension to the gold standard.

The biggest royal contingent in years set upon the Queen’s Sandrigham estate to celebrate Christmas yesterday and despite last week’s reports that those further down in the pecking order would have to sleep in servants rooms (the horror!), it looks like yesterday’s festivities went off without a hitch. Spirits were high, especially for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who walked to St. Mary Magdalene church hand in hand and greeted well-wishers on the way. Many asked after Prince George, though unsurprisingly, he did not make an appearance. Prince Harry did make an appearance, sporting his fresh from the South Pole beard alongside Will and Kate.

Alright gals! When it comes to New Year’s Eve, there’s no excuse to not go all out with your hair, makeup and of course, outfit. Even if you’re prone to spending a low-key NYE at home, there’s still something to be said about saying goodbye to 2013 with a bang. So: dig deep into your makeup bags, pull out all the products you skip over on a daily basis and plan a beauty look that’ll make you pop. Because there’s no such thing as too bright or too glittery on New Year’s Eve.

If New Year’s Eve makeup inspiration is what you’re after, the Beauty Panel is here to help. A Pop of Colour’s Shayna Wiwierski loves to go all out on New Year’s Eve, but this year swapped her usual shimmering smoky eye for an icy-blue shade. However, she’s still going to sparkle when the clock strikes twelve thanks to a bejeweled headband. Also adding interest to her hair with glittery headwear is Alison Leong from Alison*Elle. Her makeup continued the shimmering theme, thanks to a glitter-packed eyeliner and dewy highlighter. And finally, Twenty York Street’s Marilou Moles loves to go all out on NYE and will be ringing in 2014 with bouncy curls, a smoky eye and a bold lip. Happy New Year, indeed!

It’s about that time! Chestnuts roasting by an open fire seem even more fitting when you’ve got a perfect sartorial match: the ugly Christmas sweater. This year, we took the Style Panel to task, challenging them to share their best geek chic looks. Across the board, it seemed that cheesier was better, with Lion Hunter’s Mo Handahu going all out in a hilariously embellished vest and Shorts Presents‘ Kayla Short taking a cue from everyone’s favourite Christmas hero, Kevin McAllister. On the flipside, Born Lippy‘s Melanie Morais kept it classy, embracing a menswear inspired look that screams oh so winter cozy.

Over the past few years, statement jewellery has gone from runway-only to fashion mainstay. We have one last holiday hair tutorial to share, and this one is a New Year’s Eve-ready twist on the rope braid. First of all, don’t be intimated by this braiding technique. It’s much easier than it looks, especially because you’re only working with two strands of hair, not three. For its latest cool kid party, Ossington designer den Jonathan + Olivia threw down for Christmas at Wrongbar on Queen Street West. With DJ tunes from Toronto allstars like Brendan Canning, Frank Griggs and Members Only (plus one relative newbie a.k.a. me), the crowd grooved as hard as one might imagine a bunch of west enders to do on a cold winter’s night. Guests including Clint Roenisch, Chanel Croker, Kealan Anne Sullivan, Jeremy Laing, Paria Shirvani and Misshapes DJ Geordon Nicol kept the party going till way past midnight. And while the mood may have been festive, attendees clung to their black on black on black staples cause what says happy holidays more than a biker jacket and a beard? That was a trick question.
