Pop Culture: The brightly-hued details on Nars’ Andy Warhol collection
View the collection and its Andy Warhol inspiration »
If his product shade names are any indication—Edie, Nico, Ondine and Chelsea Girls—makeup artist François Nars has long been an Andy Warhol enthusiast. Though Nars laments the fact that he never had the opportunity to meet Warhol (“I think the first thing I would have done would be photograph him”), when he moved to New York in 1984, he had a connection to him in the form of his friend Marina Schiano, a former model and muse of Yves Saint Laurent, and a Warhol silkscreen subject. “She was extremely friendly with Andy and told me so many stories about him,” says Nars.

Hedi Slimane’s new logo for Saint Laurent Paris is hated on Facebook but loved by Karl. What do you think?
After the hate-athon that ensued after Yves Saint Laurent unveiled a photo of its revamped Saint Laurent Paris logo, two fashion heavy-hitters have come to the defense of creative director Hedi Slimane.
Both Karl Lagerfeld and Arizona Muse have given their stamp of approval to the new fuss-free, sans-serif logo, which was pictured atop two black boxes stacked on white marble on the brand’s Facebook page Monday. The logo, which is a nod to the brand’s Rive Gauche era back in the ‘60s, is the exact opposite of the swirly Yves Saint Laurent font that’s been a mainstay for the brand up until this point.

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »The Joe Fresh girl is always pretty, in a never-ambitious and always-achievable sort of way. After all, when your product is sold at grocery stores across the country, it’s best to avoid making a statement with a bleached eyebrow or dreadlocked hair. But that’s not to say Joe Fresh has to be completely vanilla: the beauty inspiration for their Fall 2012 show was Blow-Up, a sultry, swinging film from the ‘60s.

PFW Diary: The dispatch from last night’s rip-roaring Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs party in Paris
It doesn’t matter what else happened at the opening night party for the Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs exhibit at the Musée Des Art Décoratifs. It doesn’t matter that Gwyneth Paltrow was smiling, amiable, and stunning; that Kristen Stewart was hard to recognize with dark hair; that there were more Vuitton outfits on guests than on […]

Spring beauty report 2012: Retro influences
By Lesa Hannah and Sarah Daniel
Liquid liner hasn’t lost its momentum, but makeup artists left last season’s ’60s mod influence behind and moved back a decade to the ’50s, with inspirations like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. At Jonathan Saunders, artiste Lucia Pieroni gave models a Stepford streak, inspired by a mid-century Miami housewife who likes her Valium, she says. At Marni, makeup artist Tom Pecheux applied a cinnamon-coloured flick instead of the standard noir, which was inspired by a terracotta clutch in the collection and brought “a sophisticated finish to the face,” he says. Hair-stylists also mined the past for ideas—from the ’20s to the ’70s, and every decade in between. At Diane von Furstenberg, teased ’60s French twists were “textured so it’s rustic and earthy, and quite simple in shape,” says coiffeur Orlando Pita. But at Jean Paul Gaultier, it was an old photograph that led to the loose wartime rolls that hair guru Guido Palau fastened to the top of the head. Our favourite was the sterile-looking ’50s faux bob at Jil Sander, in all its vacuum-sealed nurse practitioner perfection.

They said/We said: Olivia Palermo has gone from reality TV star to the face of Rochas’ newest fragrance
Proving once again that dimples and a good sense of style can take you places, Olivia Palermo has just been declared the face of Rochas’ newest fragrance.
The pairing is an understandable one considering the similarities between Rochas’ signature refined elegance and Palermo’s own, ahem, “elevated” aesthetic (remember when she was forced to attend hosted a Guess party on The City but refused to wear Guess?). The house, with a well-known roster of perfumes, is letting nothing slip about the new scent—however all things considered, the face of a fragrance is more likely to influence a purchase than the scent itself.
