Our Definitive Guide to Winter Lip Care From Balms to Oils
A couple of years ago, I was about to take off on a 15 hour flight from Toronto to Hong Kong. While sitting in the window seat, I tried (as usual) to ignore the fact that I’m a terrible flyer. As the plane doors closed, however, I suddenly realized I had another problem. You know the […]

The Indie Beauty Brands You Need to Know About
In beauty circles, bigger isn’t always better. Case in point: Buyers from mega-retailers like Sephora, Urban Outfitters, Costco and Amazon now scour gatherings like the Indie Beauty Expo (IBE) for the next buzzy brand. “Indie brands hold about 5 per cent of the market, but they’re growing at 20 per cent and capturing the growth […]

12 beauty products that are (almost) too pretty to use
Have you ever received a gift that was so beautiful you couldn’t imagine ever using—and ruining—it? That’s how we feel about so many beauty products. Whether its a blush, lipstick or shadow palette featuring a gorgeously intricate design, bringing a brush to these products feels sacrilege. Of course, we eventually get over it because who […]

What sort of ingredients should I look for in a lip balm? Oils and butters of all kinds should steer you in the right direction. What’s the simplest alternative to professional gel manicures? They’re too time-consuming to commit to!
If you’re not able to commit your time (or money!) to gel manicures done by a pro, rest assured that you have a long-lasting alternative that you can pick up at the drugstore. Sally Hansen Miracle Gel (shown in “Mad Women”, $11, at drugstores) is the latest and greatest from the nail authority, and this formula is heavy-duty without the fuss of a UV or LED light-curing process, boasting up to 14 days of chip-free wear. Simply apply two coats of gel colour (no base coat required) and finish with the Miracle Gel Top Coat. Both the gel colour and top coat formulas contain similar ingredients, but the top coat contains a photoinitiator that cures with natural UV light, so the gel colour becomes more durable as time passes. Bonus: 47 shades in a slew of different finishes means this system is one you’ll definitely be able to embrace wholeheartedly!

My brows are well defined, but they are unruly and gel isn’t doing the trick. What else can I use?
If you’re blessed with full brows and have no use for brow powders or pencils at all, consider yourself lucky! If you’re blessed with brows so full that they verge into unruly territory, you probably consider yourself frustrated when hairs stray from your natural shape. If gel isn’t keeping brow hairs in order, try something more pliable that will really grip hairs and keep them together, like Sigma Beauty Brow Wax ($11, sigmabeauty.com). This pencil format means convenient application. Run it through brows, and your body heat will warm the wax up, allowing you to brush it through with a spoolie into your preferred shape. -

How can I jumpstart repairing my damaged hair?
If you’ve overprocessed your hair to high heaven, it’s time to step away from the bleach, dyes and heat styling tools and let your hair recuperate. Hair takes time to bounce back from damage, but you can help expedite the process by using an intensive mask, such as L’Oréal Paris Total Repair Extreme Ultra-Concentrated Urgent Repair Care ($3, at drugstores). This single tube contains a week of reparative treatment loaded with lactic acid and lipid-rich ceramides to target and strengthen particularly weakened areas of the hair. Simply apply after shampoo and conditioner and then rinse out, making this a handy shortcut to healthier hair! -

I bought a bright blush on a whim and it’s much more pigmented than I thought. How do I apply it?
Working with intense pigmentation can involve a bit of a learning curve, especially if you’re used to a more forgiving formula. When dealing with a mega pigmented blush, such as a mighty magenta shade like Nars Blush in “Coeur Battant” ($32, narscosmetics.com), it all boils down to how you apply the product. Take your blush brush and tap it very lightly in the blush and tap it lightly on the back of your hand to remove a bit of the pigment. Now you can apply the blush to your face as you usually would. Step back and evaluate the colour payoff and repeat this process until you’re pleased with the outcome. The idea here is that it’s easier to gradually add colour to the face instead of inundating your cheeks with a bold shade that would overwhelm your whole look.

I’m going to be on some long-haul flights this summer and want to know how to prevent my lips from drying out and flaking. Any pointers?
Determining a steadfast method of avoiding full-fledged plane dehydration has been my objective for quite some time now! First, keep up on your fluids (which also means avoiding alcohol and caffeine) and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Then, bring in the heavy artillery: Hourglass No. 28 Lip Treatment Oil ($49, sephora.ca). This oil is actually more akin to a gel formula and while it does leave your lips with a bit of shine when you apply it with the 24-karat gold-tip applicator, the benefits of this formula go far beyond the glossiness! The treatment oil contains 14 essential oils (including lavender, rose geranium and orange), 10 plant oils (all lipid-rich, such as jojoba, olive and sweet almond), as well as vitamins A, C, E and B5. This stacked formula is nothing to scoff at and it works wonders for in-flight lip moisturization! -

How do I make my at-home blowout frizz-free in the summer?
Something key to remember is that the environment in which you blowdry your hair has a large impact on how your hair will react to heat styling. It’s advisable to blowdry your hair in a dry environment, i.e. not the bathroom you just steamed up with your shower! Next, make sure your hair is actually completely dry when you have completed the blowout. Any damp areas are likely to react to the air temperatures around you, which seldom results in smooth strands. Always finish hair with an anti-humidity spray, such as Oribe Imperméable Anti-humidity Spray ($44, at Donato Salon & Spa), which utilizes copolymer technology to shield hair from the impact of humidity, and also contains a UV filter to protect hair. -
