This Roman-inspired Jewellery Line Has an Unusual Origin Story
No opera has ever had a collection of precious ornaments to go along with it, even the most famous ones. Not Giancomo Puccini’s La Bohème, which captures the trials of young love between main characters Mimi and Rodolfo. Or even Georges Bizet’s Carmen, the story of a man named Don Josè who is lured away from […]

Glitz, opera, and plenty of bubbly: Rufus Wainwright hypes us for this year’s Operanation fundraising bash
For opera fans and party lovers alike, the Canadian Opera Company’s annual fundraising gala, Operanation, is one of the hottest tickets of the year. Taking place in the crystalline Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, the event is an innovative mix of opera, rock, dance, and, of course, plenty of bubbly that not only delights the crowd but also raises a pretty penny for the company (last year’s gala raised more than $100,000). This year, the COC has sweetened the pot by adding Rufus Wainwright and Montreal-based dance-pop band Austra to the lineup of Operanation 8: A Muse Ball.

A night at the opera with Barilà
Montreal style-mavens know Sabrina Barilà for her edgy women’s collection Barilà, which she produces alongside her sister Claudia. Last Saturday’s opening night of Jules Massenet’s opera Werther marked a first for l’Opéra de Montréal for inviting a Quebecoise fashion designer to outfit the cast. For Barilà, it was also the first time she created clothes for the stage instead of the runway. I caught up with the local créatrice just before the Werther premiere to chat about her operatic debut.

Story update: Beth Clayton withdraws from the Canadian Opera Company production of Carmen
The Canadian Opera Company announced yesterday that mezzo-soprano Beth Clayton, who was to play the title role in the company’s upcoming production of Bizet’s Carmen, has withdrawn due to “health reasons.” In the February issue of FASHION, the Arkansas-born singer told writer Olivia Stren, “It has all this tumult in it, but at the same time, it has so much joy and sauciness. And the more physical, the better for me; I love getting down and dirty. When I’m playing Carmen, I can honestly say ‘Yes! I am Carmen. ”
The COC has named Israeli mezzo Rinat Shaham as Clayton’s replacement for the first six performances

This weekend: Opera To Go
Like the prospect of a seven-course French dinner, the traditional opera daunts as much as it delights. Luckily, there’s lighter fare in Toronto this weekend. Think of Tapestry’s Opera To Go (March 27 to 29, from $20, 416-973-4000, tapestrynewopera.com)—three short works, followed by a longer (but still only 40-minute) one-act affair—as a tasting of perfect […]
