Sunday is a day of relaxing and that is exactly what I did as I sat back in my seat, watching with sparkling eyes as models graced the runway at the Building Our Future Fashion Show, which featured some of the city’s most distinguished independent designers including Rebecca King, Niki Gerety and Sova Design.

  • Saskatoon: A classic pick for V-Day

mar09swar_large1I don’t understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine’s Day.  When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon.—Author Unknown

While wandering through the mall last week, I passed by window displays of teddy bears, cards, chocolates and roses.  It wasn’t until a picture of a heart-shaped diamond pendant caught my eye that I realized I had been oblivious to the obvious: Valentine’s Day. Though I am not really the romantic type, I definitely don’t have any problems with the holiday.  Leave out the sappy love poems, but bring on the chocolates and flowers. And I don’t mind a nice dinner for two.

  • Saskatoon: A clean slate

feb09lulu_250I have a love-hate relationship with January.  I can’t wait to begin the New Year with a fresh slate, a clean start, a new me.   It is a time to set goals, clean closets, shed extra pounds, re-evaluate, plan, organize and reacquaint myself with old friends—in my case, the gym.

  • Saskatoon: Footwear fix

I haven’t been letting the winter blues get to me, despite the record-breaking temperatures our frosty little city has been receiving. At least not when Fixation (107 23rd St. E., 306-384-7463, fixationshoes.com) has their doors open.

  • Saskatoon spa break!

Don’t let this holiday season stress you out. Stop in at Spa Ahava (720 Broadway Avenue, 306-978-8111, spaahava.com), a little oasis snuggled between the unique shops in the heart of Broadway.

  • Saskatoon: A clutch of parties

The holiday season is upon us and there is no time I love more than Christmas.  I love it all: the busyness, shopping, baking, shopping, decorating, shopping and music. It’s also the time of year when the most glitz and glamour emerges from our closets (and we search for some new head turners).

  • Saskatoon: Secret garden

There is nothing better than dressing up for a good cause, and on Friday night, Saskatoon put on its finest for Choc à la Cure (choclacure.com), a gala evening put on by Dutch Growers in support of the Saskatoon Cancer Centre. The live and silent auctions, which included travel, art and spa packages, were accompanied by live jazz, delectable hors d’oeuvres and of course, mouth-watering chocolate desserts by the city’s finest chefs

  • Saskatoon: In rainbows

nov09saskblog_250Known for its shelves of brightly colored clothing, American Apparel is easily transformed into a sea of rainbows.  One can’t help but feel a little uplifted entering a store with such vibrant colors, simple yet chic décor, outgoing staff and plenty of space to walk around.

  • Saskatoon: On the hunt for mukluks

Winter is on the verge. The temperature is sliding and the sun no longer peers into my window to greet me in the morning. Saskatchewan winters can be pretty unpredictable and to stay fashionable during this time, when everyone should be hibernating, you need to plan ahead. Mukluks are the perfect way to stay stylish during the colder months (and a great alternative to Uggs).

  • Saskatoon: Broadway bound

It’s no coincidence that Broadway is lined with independently owned boutiques, cafes and specialty stores. Broadway was Saskatoon’s first commercial area and included such landmarks as the general store, dairy, post office, theatre and bank. It is an area rich in history and a sense of community, while promoting local businesses and a spirit of individuality.

  • Saskatoon: High Caliber denim

If you are trying to find premium denim, look no further: Caliber (155 – 2nd Ave. S., 306-664-9980) is one of the newest high-end fashion stores to hit the scene in Saskatoon. Located in the heart of downtown, quickly becoming one of the most popular areas for trendy boutiques and chic martini bars.

  • Saskatoon: Fall Frakas

It’s that time of the year again. I feel the need to go out and buy new crayons, sharpeners and markers, and make a fresh start. Although I don’t need all the new school supplies I once did, I still find justification to go out and buy a few new outfits and some little extras to go with them.
