TFW Diary: Caitlin Power’s geometric-print extraterrestrial journey
View the full collection »
See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »Calgarian fashion darling Caitlin Power showed a (literally) out-of-this-world Fall 2012 collection yesterday. Extraterrestrial models sported Rooney Mara bleached eyebrows and the most covet-worthy black lipstick we’ve seen since Yves Saint Laurent Fall 2008!
Fabrics focused on the techy-stiff with an abundance of neoprene and airy sheers. The most amazing women’s pieces were the precision-cut silk button-ups (especially a cream confection with lime green piping). Likewise with a series of sheer toppers complete with voluminous arms and band detailing. These sheers looked best when worn risqué over nothing.

Designer profile: Alex & Eli’s far-out, tailored riffs
Back when Aja Singer and Anna Zeman were new-found Parsons grads, the Toronto and Seattle natives banded together to fill the gap between high-end and the everyday. Five seasons later, the two have clearly defined their New York-based brand, Alex & Eli, as the answer to virtually every wardrobe dilemma a twenty-something girl about town might have. With a combined resume boasting apprenticeships at the likes of Zac Posen, Carolina Herrera and Rodarte, its no wonder that the fairly young brand has got such strong vision. While others may design with pure fantasy in mind, Singer and Zeman just get it.
Both having studied science in their undergraduate years, the designers were inspired by Star Trek when creating their fall collection. Blending those far-out references with the duo’s yen for tailoring, the collection comes off as flawlessly relaxed and firmly planted in reality. As soon as we got our hands on the fall look book, we had no choice but to find out more from the horses’ designers’ mouths.

Charlottetown: Embracing your inner nerd
Greetings fellow nerds! I come before you today with tidings of great joy. It is the computer age and as such, we who have long been bullied and mistreated for our shared passions (Star Wars, computers, Magic: The Gathering, etc.) are now ruling the world. Geeky and scarily intelligent men like Steve Jobs are reinventing the wheel, skinny, awkward musicians like Joel Plaskett are making clever music, and some of the world’s greatest fashion designers wear their nerd status proudly (see Yuko Yoshitake, Diana Eng, and Raf Simons).

Daily reads: Azzedine Alaïa hearts Beyoncé, Trekkie scents and happy manis
Now that the whole Olivier Theyskens/Nina Ricci whirlwind has settled, we can concentrate on the drama that is Peter Som’s replacement at Bill Blass. It’ll probably be Richard Chai. [Fashionologie]
Alaïa likes to do the Single Ladies dance. Designers: they’re just like us! [Fashionista]
Warning: The following is only for those who grew up in the ’90s. One of our own eds was once a guest editor for best-mag-ever Sassy, a fact that we are eternally impressed/jealous of. Here, the writer of the famous Kurt/Courtney article reminisces about the interview. (Complete with PDF of the original story!) [I Heart Daily]
