Why We All Need to Get on Board with Solange ASAP
www.solangemusic.com Patrice is MOM A photo posted by Solange (@saintrecords) on Sep 21, 2016 at 10:54am PDT Watching Solange transform from a pop star into a legit R&B artist has been a trip. Her debut disc, Solo Star—which was released in 2003—seems a universe away from the type of music she’s been focusing on in […]

Q&A: Priscilla Queen of the Desert makeup artist gives us the lowdown on glitter
Last week, we had the unmitigated glittery delight of catching Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical (until January 2, mirvish.com), the story of three drag queens who set out across the Australian desert in the titular bus to do a gig at a casino in Alice Springs. The costumes, all 500 of them, were spectacular, and while it is certainly difficult to compete for attention with a dress made of flip-flops, the makeup–from glow-in-the-dark eyeshadow to glittery lipstick, was pretty great as well. To find out more about the production, we grilled lead makeup artist Justen Brosnan, whose credits include Broadway productions of The Drowsy Chaperone and Legally Blonde: The Musical, about the behind-the-scenes ballet and just how much glitter goes into the show.

Toronto culture picks: A trio of dance performances, and the importance of to-do lists
I’m going to have to polish off my Arty Girl Outfits–it’s a big week in Toronto for dance and theatre and I want to look “thinky.” First up is a two-nights only performance of Dream of the Red Chamber from the Beijing Friendship Dance Company. The 80-dancer, 800-costume extravaganza is a sure-to-be pretty Chinese Romeo […]

Culture pick: A high-wire rivalry in The Great Farini Project
The Great Farini Project (until September 25, Enwave Threatre, harbourfrontcentre.com) is “a harrowing dance of one-upmanship” that chronicles the real life, decades long rivalry between high-wire walkers The Great Farini and The Great Blondin. Inspired by the life of Canadian William Hunt, or “The Great Farini, this is the first full-length work by choreographer and […]

Fashion news: Victoria’s Secret sued, Jeanne Beker on stage and Kanye West’s leather pants addiction
Victoria’s Secret is being sued by shoe company Valley Lane Industries for US$48 million. The company claims that VS forced a Chinese supplier, who had worked with the smaller company for 25 years, to end their partnership so that the lingerie brand could work with the supplier exclusively. Says a lawyer for Valley Lane: “Victoria’s Secret has done everything they could to put them out of business.” Trouble in diamond-studded paradise? [NYDN]
But things aren’t all bad for VS. They’ve recently launched a new bra, the Incredible, and to celebrate, Chanel Iman, Candice Swanepoel and Erin Heatherton appeared on Fox & Friends, where they had the arduous task of explaining the new brassiere to two male anchors. See the exchange above. [Huffington Post]

Culture pick: Love, Loss and What I wore
I confess that when I first got the invite to the Toronto premiere of Love, Loss and What I Wore (Panasonic Theatre, 651 Yonge St., lovelossonstage.ca), I was scared. Awash in bad Vagina Monologues flashbacks (I’m sorry. Hi. That play sucked) and memories of my years as an ever-empowered 1990s feminist undergrad, I was worried that I was in for a long night of cloying female bonding and treacle-y ra ra lady feel-good times. I was very pleasantly surprised.
