Toronto: Barbie by David Dixon Spring 2010
“Banish the black, burn the blue and bury the beige. Think pink!” sang Kay Thompson in the video introduction to the Barbie by David Dixon show. Apt lyrics for a collection inspired by both the 1957 movie Funny Face and the Barbie doll. With the runway alit with a rosy glow, models with long, bouncy locks and pink-hued lips debuted classic pieces in feminine fabrics and cuts. A polka-dot sundress, a high-voltage magenta skirt, a pintucked day coat and a sequin-sprayed jacket were standouts. This season’s Barbie girl even looked grown up enough to be called Barbara.

Toronto: Andy Thê-Anh Spring 2010
This season, Andy Thê-Anh eschewed the runway for a more intimate, presentation-style show. We slipped past the doormen into a dramatic room featuring wall-to-wall zebra patterned carpeting, oversized chandeliers dripping with crystals and benches upholstered in black faux fur. The low-lying platform gave way to a parade of sophisticated day wear: stiff, silky, zippered dresses, slim tailored pants and tucked and pleated jackets. Crisp white was a clever counterpoint to a palette of bright cerulean blue and a paler sky blue. The quintet of flowing, champagne evening gowns that closed the show are sure to delight Thê-Anh’s loyal following.

LG Fashion Week: Tuesday’s best look
David Dixon sent a trio of aluminum-spangled pieces shushing down the runway last night. The skirt above is as much flapper fringe as it is the flowing water of Dixon’s theme, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. A showstopper. Toronto: Holts’ opening party shows off top Canadian talent
Last night, Toronto’s fashion crowd gathered for the first official party of LG Fashion Week: the Holt Renfrew Media Cocktail. The bash is always a hot ticket, and in recent seasons, Holts has offered up a mini runway show to showcase the Canadian talent they’re featuring in their World Design Lab. This season, the group was, what the company’s VP of fashion direction, Barbara Atkin, referred to as “our own group of seven.” The presentation was a chance to take a peek at looks from designers who show in other cities, as with Jeremy Laing and Denis Gagnon, or who don’t do shows at all, as is the case with Mikhael Kale, Lida Baday and Smythe. Kale’s pieces were a space-age pastiche of skins, prints and fringe, while Baday showed a trio of simple, well-crafted pieces in black and white. And we never get tired of seeing what Denis Gagnon can do with leather. Also on the ticket were a handful of looks from Greta Constantine, who showed their full collection last week, and Pink Tartan, who’s up tomorrow night.

Toronto: Vawk Spring 2010
Held under Frank Gehry’s spiral staircase in the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Walker Court (guaranteed to be the coolest show spot of the week), Vawk designer Sunny Fong’s first post Project Runway Canada show began on a high note with a beautifully tailored white suit complete with nautical-inspired accents. Other stylish spring stars included a selection of vanilla-hued perforated leather pieces. Overall, Fong’s collection showcased lots of innovative designs based on an imaginary trip to French Polynesia, but in some cases (like the line-up of peekaboo fuschia pieces) the execution fell flat. FASHION‘s final thought: There are Sunny days ahead.

LG Fashion Week: Monday’s best look
Monday’s look of the day was plucked from Sunny Fong’s 12-piece collection for his label, Vawk. Fong’s perforated leather was our favourite of his hand-done details and we love the simplicity of this vanilla-hued coat dress. Accessories designer Jessica Jensen makes a foray into dresses
Handbag designer Jessica Jensen held her Spring 2010 preview on Friday night at the Thrush Holmes Empire gallery on Toronto’s Queen St. West. Jensen displayed the collection alongside works by her artist husband, Joshua Jensen-Nagle and both explored the same theme: the calm after the storm.
Jensen’s collection of simply-shaped totes, clutches and satchels was crafted from basket-woven leather and wave-like panels in soft greys, seafoam, purples, citrus green and blush.
