Fashion by the decade: 8 Style Panel members share their favourite retro-dressing tips
The nineties may have made a comeback on the runways of late, but designers seemed to have an even bigger throwback for the upcoming Fall 2014 season. 10 reasons Seinfeld’s Elaine Benes was the original ’90s trendsetter
On July 5, we celebrate an event more important than Canada Day and Independence Day put together: the 25th anniversary of Seinfeld, the show about nothing (that meant everything) and the inspiration for anyone who wears running shoes with jeans. But between the Kramer’s briefcase, the bisque, and the withholding of soup, Seinfeld delivered something even more important. Enter: Elaine Benes. The series’ true hero and fashion icon.
Elaine Benes established nineties style as we know it, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. From mini backpacks to oversized outerwear to blazers (sweet, sweet blazers), the forever-underrated/often-imitated Seinfeld character cultivated a look we spend serious dollars and (even more) serious hours in thrift stores trying to re-create.
And yet, she gets no respect. In an era in which we boast about how much stars and/or characters are just like us, we still bypass the original everywoman. Elaine represented (and represents still) both the eclecticism and the “I’ve given up” vibe that defined the early-to-mid ‘90s by challenging gender norms, the idea of glamour and unapologetically wearing a scrunchie.
So with that being said, here’s a round up of 10 Benes looks we’re still trying to emulate today. All of which work perfectly with the big salad—here’s your Christmas card.

Afternoon Delight: DKNY’s multi-strap Rita sandal is, like, so totally ’90s

How spring’s ’90s revival is helping one editor deal with her premature age crisis
See the 1990s trend on the runways »
For most of my 20s, I’ve been your archetypal hypochondriac (let’s just say a good old MRI really calms my nerves), but lately, my Woody Allen-like fear of the end has morphed into something even more frightful: the end of my youth. I’ll be 30 next April—a milestone I’ve been dreading since I turned 27 (which, let’s be honest, was traumatic enough). Most say the best is yet to come, but from where I’m sitting, my impending existential grapple with miniskirts has pushed me down a road of teenage wardrobe nostalgia where crushed velvet, neon and over-the-top everything reign supreme.
Fashion’s ’90s streak couldn’t have come at a better time. For me, the ’90s represent a period in my life when my biggest priorities were decorating my room with posters of Leonardo DiCaprio, sneaking into 14A movies like Cruel Intentions and The Craft and lining up outside MuchMusic to see The Backstreet Boys. Fast-forward to today and the ’90s couldn’t be more pervasive. Crop tops and Birkenstocks are street-style staples, witches are the new vampires and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is, well, fresh again. And while for many it may feel early for a ’90s redux, the evidence says otherwise: Cher Horowitz’s, like, totally important Alaïa moment happened 19 years ago. Aaliyah has been dead for 13 years. And Marc Jacobs’s infamous grunge collection for Perry Ellis? That was 21 years ago.

Spring transition: 11 Style Panel tips for adding this season’s trends into your existing wardrobe
Winter be damned! We are officially setting out sights on spring, and along with it, its myriad bright, shiny list of trends to try. As we mentioned last week, all it takes are a few key pieces to transition your wardrobe through the seasons. Today, we’re taking a cue from our Style Panel, who has taken the transition one step further by working some spring trends into existing winter wardrobes.
The ‘90s made its way back onto the Spring 2014 runways courtesy of designers like DKNY and Rag & Bone, who re-introduced the nostalgic trend with a slick sporty twist. Blogger Nichole Alabi welcomes it with open arms, opting for a transitional look of loose fit crop top, baggy distressed denim and a pair of tan Ewing sneakers that would make even the Fresh Price envious. And while pastels are certainly not a foreign idea, the spring runways proved that head to toe looks in soft hues could still be interesting. Shorts Presents blogger Kayla Short and Lyndsey Forest of Over My Styled Body try the trend in two different ways, with equally awesome results.
