The Great Gatsby makeup: Maurizio Silvi shares the film’s 1920s beauty secrets
Get a sneak peek at the 1920s makeup looks from The Great Gatsby »
There are just a few weeks to go before The Great Gatsby hits theatres and excitement for the film is as strong as ever. From extended trailers to Prada’s costumes, the slow drip of Gatsby content has us eager to see the real thing—but it’s (almost!) enough to keep us satisfied until May 10. And now we’re adding to the sneak peek onslaught. M.A.C Cosmetics worked with The Great Gatsby’s makeup designer, Maurizio Silvi, and provided product used in the film—and we have the behind-the-scenes scoop from Silvi himself.
Of all the reasons to obsess over the film, the 1920s aesthetic ranks at the top of our list. It’s also one of Silvi’s favourite eras: “Among the fashions that will remain forever in history, that of the ’20s is certainly the highest expression of class and beauty. This era encompassed years of revolution, unconventionality and renewal. The makeup is very refined […] Baz Luhrmann’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Great Gatsby will give a remarkable imprint on fashion and makeup.” Curious about the process for creating the makeup looks from The Great Gatsby? Lady Gaga is rumoured to be writing a song for The Great Gatsby soundtrack!
Despite disappointment that The Great Gatsby’s original Christmas 2012 premiere date was pushed back to May 2013, the delay does mean there’s more time for exciting Gatsby rumours to unfold. Today’s edition: Lady Gaga may be recording a song for the film’s soundtrack.
According to British Vogue, actress Adelaide Clemens—who plays Myrtle’s sister in the film—spilled the beans earlier this week and also hinted that Prince may be contributing to the soundtrack. While nothing has been confirmed by Lady Gaga or the the producers of the film, we started thinking of how she could rework some of her existing songs for the film:

Project Runway All Stars Recap: The final three compete in their version of The Hunger Games. But no one dies!
I was trying to find a mystical quotation about endings or journeys coming to an close, but damn if Rumi didn’t talk a lot about love! Which means that it’s up to me to provide some eloquent gloss on last night’s events—the night where Project Runway All Stars came to its complicated, emotional conclusion. To you I say: This is not a day to feel bereft, or lost or unduly abandoned—this is a beginning for us all! And when the winner is announced, and he receives his (BOW NOW NA NA NA NOW!) $100,000 cheque and embroidery studio and whatnot, we too will all be set free—granted, without an HP Digital Suite courtesy of L’Oréal Paris—and yet, free to pursue our own long-sought dreams, like The Hunger Games, or a hot dog.
And in a shocking template modification, I will not award/unaward measly points for things that miffed and/or pleased me based on my own impossible metric. Instead I will strive to provide the most charitable and non-petty remarks on this utterly momentous event—the first ever finale of the first ever season of Project Runway All Stars!

Q&A: Clayton Evans of Complexgeometries
Clayton Evans is busy, busy, busy and his Complexgeometries line (available at Reborn, complexgeometries.com) is getting so much attention and praise. I had the Alberta-born, Montreal-based designer, who recently showed his Fall 2009 collection, “…between good and evil,” answer some questions, loosely inspired by the designs. But first, the completely self-taught scissor master would probably appreciate if I told you a bit about the concept behind his latest creations. Evans describes his inspiration as “the grey zone existing between right and wrong.” The palette is mostly black, white and grey and the designs are made without an obvious front or back, allowing you to wear them however you like. Even better, Evans suggests that his large collars and capes “can be used to create modesty or conceal shame.” Since when do designers think about our obsessing over little flaws when creating a piece of clothing? So here’s Evans’ world in five little questions–my own condensed Proust questionnaire!
