Stocking up at the Bay’s Olympics superstore
I’ve been on the Olympics bandwagon since we landed the bid in 2003, but now that I’ve been seeing the official team apparel all over Vancouver, I decided it was about time I headed to the Olympics superstore at the Bay downtown (674 Granville St., 604-681-6211, hbc.com) to pick up my own pieces. After my […]

Heading to Vancouver for the Games? Here’s a full deck of places to eat and shop
With just 11 days to go, Vancouver’s ready for the Olympics (I hope, anyway), and the visitors are starting to trickle in. Of course, said visitors will be looking for things to do, see, and eat—after all, Olympic athletes are known for being fast, meaning those ticketed events will hardly take up 24 hours of one’s time! How handy, then, that the Travellers Deck (travellersdeck.com) recently landed on my desk.

Vancouver: An Olympic-sized menu at Cactus Club Cafe
Two of the biggest buzz topics in the lead-up to the Games have been (a) the dreaded traffic jams, and (b) how hard it’s going to be to find a decent place to eat around the Olympic venues. While some restaurants have opted for buy-outs, others have decided to stay open for walk-ins only. Cactus Club Cafe (cactusclubcafe.com) has opted for the latter, meaning one of western Canada’s favourite chains will likely soon be one of the world’s, too. I recently sat down in Bentall 5 (a room that also hosts a trio of original Basquiats, thanks to Cactus founder Richard Jaffray’s fine—ahem—taste for art) for a tasting menu of chef Rob Feenie’s newest creations.

DSquared’s Dean and Dan to carry the Olympic torch
Dsquared’s Dean and Dan Caten are going to be carrying the Olympic torch in the relay leading up to February’s Olympic games in Vancouver. The pair are already involved in the Olympic effort, outfitting the performers for the Games’ opening and closing ceremonies. The designers will be carrying the flame on February 10–the second last […]

Warm up with Aritzia’s Olympic line
Zipping around the city on the Canada Line is a convenient, but inevitably cold, wet experience. Enter this faux fur-lined trapper hat ($60) from Park Life for Aritzia, one of the most stylish (and my personal favourite) licensed collections for the Games. Other, equally warm picks from the line include the dolman sleeve tops with […]

Vancouver: Get pinned with Olympic-inspired jewels
Hey, if I can’t wear a medal, at least I can wear a not-too-cheesy rendition of the the Inukshuk–the 2010 Games’ official emblem. Designed by veteran Vancouver jewellery designer, Elsa Corsi (elsacorsi.com), and only available until they sell out (so, like, tomorrow), these pins feature crystals in a variety of shades and colours, so you […]

Learn to shred at Snow Camp
I might not be competing in the 2010 Games (at under one month to go, I think I missed the boat), but it’s never too late to brush up on my snowboarding skills. My favourite place to do just that was at Roxy’s two-day all girls All Star Snow Camp (from $185, whistlerblackcomb.com/roxycamps), which recommences after the Olympics break.

Dsquared’s wish list includes a limo helicopter and an island
Dean and Dan are on a roll. The Caten twins from Willowdale, Ont., (who famously moved to Milan in 1991) recently launched Dsquared eyewear, are starring in the Bravo reality series Launch My Line and have now been immortalized with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. This winter, their fragrances He Wood and She […]

Time for the Games
With the official one-year countdown to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics underway as of February 12, international media tour groups have been flooding into the city. One recent press event I was lucky enough to be invited to was a full-day trip to Whistler, where we were given a tour of the Whistler Sliding Centre, which includes the track used by bobsleigh, luge and skeleton (a crazy sport where athletes speed down the hill headfirst).
