Pretty hurts: How Hollywood shaped the way we see evil beauty today
Evil beauty from the beginning »
Beauty, at Walt Disney Studios, is in the eye of the animator. Disney films have always conflated natural beauty with inherent goodness, unnatural beauty as inherent wickedness, giving their princesses and heroines the eyes, hair, lips, and skins female villains would kill for.
Sleeping Beauty, Disney’s 1959 masterpiece, is the best example of this dynamic: born with all the markers of ‘natural’ beauty, Aurora is both a good person and good to look at. She’s blonde, thin, graceful and beloved by animals, fairies and humans. She’s also almost entirely silent—in Ariane Lange’s piece on the history of pre-Disney Sleeping Beauty incarnations, she counts only 263 words spoken by our titular beauty, not counting lyrics she sings or the noises she makes in response to other characters. The action starts for Aurora when a single drop of blood appears on her sixteenth birthday, rendering her unconscious until a man comes to legitimize her existence with his mouth.
Our villain, Maleficent, is Disney’s greatest hot bitch in charge. In sharp contrast to Aurora, Maleficent is funny, a woman who speaks often and with great force, so bad and so beautiful all at once.

Introducing the OPI Oz The Great and Powerful collection: See all 7 nail polish shades (Including one designed for James Franco?)
See all 7 shades of OPI Oz The Great and Powerful nail polishes »
Yesterday OPI gave nail polish lovers a new reason to be excited for 2013 by announcing the launch of a new collection on their Facebook page. Set to hit counters in March, the OPI Oz The Great and Powerful collection features seven nail polishes inspired by the forthcoming Disney movie.
There are no ruby-red slippers to be found here: Oz The Great and Powerful is a prelude to Dorothy’s adventures, focusing on Glinda (the good witch, played by Michelle Williams) and her sisters—as well as how Oz himself came to be. Meaning: OPI has created a collection that’s a mix of soft shades and shimmering, stand-out glitters. It also includes a new shade of Liquid Sand polish named “What Wizardry Is This?” which seems to be a little more masculine than your typical glitter. Said OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, via press release: “This rich taupe hue was designed for James Franco’s character, the great Wizard of Oz, and is sure to make a bold statement this spring.”

London Fashion Week will pay tribute to everyone’s favourite cartoon muse
One of the highlights of this year’s London Fashion Week is going to be inspired by an unlikely albeit adorable muse: Minnie Mouse and her famous polka-dotted ensemble will be the sartorial reference point for a whole slew of designers, who will be collaborating on an exclusive line in honour of the fictional mouse.
“Minnie Mouse Must Haves” designs will be unveiled during LFW, with Richard Nicoll, Katie Hillier, Giles Deacon, Terry de Havilland, Lulu Guinness and more contributing Minnie-inspired looks. Like Daisy Duck and the rest of her crew, Minnie had an unmistakable flare for fashion: bows, polka-dotted dresses and white gloves were always in her repertoire (not to mention her big, round ears), so expect the dot trend to hold strong on the spring 2013 runway.

Meet Lily Collins: Our April cover star discusses her breakout role as Snow White and gives us the lowdown on her spring wardrobe staples
Princess Diary
By Dennis HensleyLily Collins embarks on a thoroughly modern fairy tale with her first starring role,
as a sword-fighting, prince-saving Snow White. When Lily Collins arrived for her first costume fitting as Snow White on the Montreal set of Mirror Mirror, she assumed the most fabulous getups would go to her co-star Julia Roberts, who plays the evil queen. “I saw all these dramatic, colourful, amazing outfits and I thought, ‘Wow, Julia’s so lucky,’” says the 23-year-old British-born actress who’s best known for playing Sandra Bullock’s daughter in The Blind Side. “And then they started bringing them in, and I said, ‘Is this for me?’ The first outfit took 25 minutes to get into, and when I looked in the mirror I got teary-eyed.” Then there were the elaborate sets; she describes a giant indoor forest and 40 tons of salt for snow. “I was sprinting through this huge room of trees, in my ball gown, sword-fighting, going up cliffs,” she marvels. “When the crew brought their kids onto set, they would see me and start crying. They were like, ‘Blanche Neige!’”

While the New York Post referred to Lady Gaga‘s outlandish appearance at her sister’s graduation as her way of “getting back at the bitches who mocked her lust for stardom,” a recent article in WWD suggests it’s more of a once-an-attention-seeker-always-an-attention-seeker kind of thing. Apparently she was no different in high school, though she didn’t have Giorgio and Miuccia on her side back then. [WWD]
