Inside the Interior Design Show: 24 photos from last night’s kick-off party in Toronto

There is nothing like a blowout art party to get the who’s who of Toronto’s design scene out of the house despite frigid temps—last night’s kick-off for the Interior Design Show certainly was that. The city’s design-inclined denizens and partygoers flocked to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, where they were wowed with this year’s offerings from the likes of Andrew Richard Design, international guest of honour Oki Sato and up and comers featured in the Designboom Mart, where items were up for grabs for as low as a dollar each. There was talk of an igloo too, which upon closer look, was actually the name of design duo Alain Courchesne and Anna Abbruzzo’s company: Igloodgn, who exhibited their work and play space as part of the How Do You Work? exhibit.

Inside the Design Exchange gala: 30 photos of Toronto’s creative elite soaking up the latest and greatest art party
See our Design Exchange gala photos »
Toronto’s creative elite was treated to a veritable feast for the eyes at last Friday’s annual Design Exchange gala, this year revamped and restyled under the theme of “Intersection.” Surely meant to rival the glittering reputation held by the Power Plant’s annual Power Ball gala for being the art party of the year, the event succeeded in being everything it wanted to be—part art exhibit, part auction, party VIP hobnob and part knockout bash—complete with guest of honour Douglas Coupland posing for pictures, making speeches and even imitating a Canada goose.
Various phases of the night stretched across parts of the DX I didn’t even know existed. Case in point: a pop up mystery dinner put on by Matty Matheson of Parts + Labour catering, which took place in a dimly lit library overlooking King Street. There was trout roe, but where were the books?

SNP’s word of the day: McLuhanism
Word: McLuhanism
Definition: Basically, a set of principles derived from and defined by the thinking of McLuhan, as in Marshall, the ’60s radical thinker and media prophet. You literally can’t be Canadian and go to high school without knowing at least one thing about him: usually, that “the medium is the message.”

Fashion news: Coco’s wedding pic, Roots gets electric with Douglas Coupland, and a Canuck model apparently ruins a World Cup match
An image of Coco Rocha‘s recent wedding to James Conran has surfaced. The bride looks stunning in a custom Zac Posen dress, which BFF Behati Prinsloo described as “It was tight over her body all the way to her knees, then it had this extreme mermaid tail at the bottom. The straps were off the shoulder, and the material looked vintage – it’s sort of hard to explain, you have to see it.” [Huffington Post]
Writer and designer Douglas Coupland is adding fashion designer to his already impressive resume. Roots has decided to expand their Canadiana by featuring a limited edition collection of pieces designed by Mr. Coupland. Dubbed Canada Goes Electric, the line includes T-shirts with TV test pattern bars and pixelated maple leaves that are sure to bring out your inner Microserf when they go on sale July 8.
