Q&A: Joe Mimran of Joe Fresh Style
Last Wednesday’s Joe Fresh Style runway show was full of crisp, clean sportif—complete with quilted skirts, sheer mesh and a knit jumpsuit. As always, Fashion Week goers clamoured to see what Joe had on tap for fall and which big Canadian faces would come down the runway. (This season: Irina Lazareanu, Amanda Laine and Taryn Davidson). FASHION talked to designer Joe Mimran post-show about the collection, speed skating style and that cozy little onesie.
I enjoyed the show last night. It looked very warm.
“It was nice and cozy.”
We’ll start with the inspiration. What was your starting place for the collection?
“It really started with this whole idea of skating and the first thing I drew out was the down skirt. I wanted to have it in very teacup shape because it’s got the bones in it and it really does give this whole sense of skating. And then from there it kind of got into speed skating and the notion of our Canadian speed skaters and that’s where the cat suit came from. -
Toronto: Biddell and Lucian Matis Fall 2009
We all have fond memories of coloured denim, right? Evan Biddell hopes so. Of all the rock-steady looks he rolled down the runway–where ”styling” equalled ”more studded leather!” and the soundtrack was a deafening jam–what stood out most were streetwise separates in plum, teal and chartreuse.

Backstage beauty: Pink Tartan and Joe Fresh Style
Pink Tartan
The Pink Tartan lady is so not a lady this season. At the Fall 2009 show on Wednesday night, she’d jettisoned every ounce of femininity out the window and morphed into an androgynous being. To create a “boyish” look, L’Oreal Paris official makeup artist Eddie Maleterre created a completely neutral face with matte skin, contouring the cheeks with powder four shades darker than the model’s skin tone. -
Toronto: Nada Fall 2009 and Project Runway
Tight security at the tents today – “Please have your tickets out at the door” – so it makes getting past the club-style bouncers to do our job that much more difficult. And while we think it is great that the FDCC opened up the shows to the public (runway access = revenue), it has become a little too night clubby with its overcapacity numbers and sweaty, cocktail-fueled revellers.

Backstage beauty: Andy Thê-Anh
It’s 6 o’clock on Wednesday evening and the scene backstage at Andy Thê-Anh is relatively calm. Working to a soundtrack of Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga, the L’Oréal Paris team tends to the lead models as Thê-Anh watches closely.

Toronto: Comrags, Andy Thê-Anh, Pink Tartan and Joe Fresh Style Fall 2009
Packed schedule on the LG roster with some of Toronto’s most well-known labels – Comrags, Andy Thê-Anh, Pink Tartan and Joe Fresh Style. Time to rev up those fashion batteries and re-gloss those air-kissers…
Comrags [watch our interview] designers Joyce Gunhouse and Judy Cornish delivered a strong Fall 2009 collection. And if the wool plaids, printed knits and florals didn’t wow you (as if they wouldn’t…) then surely the large bouquets presented to the designers by the Comrags’ kids during their runway bow would have touched your haute little heart.
