Paris: A chic jungle adventure at Dries
Climbing the carpeted marble steps to the grand hallway at Hôtel de Ville–the Paris equivalent of city hall–felt more like going to church than to a fashion show. The air was hushed, the mood somber, until one reached the hall of mirrors, modeled after the same at the Palace of Versailles. The thrill was palpable […]

Milan: Dolce & Gabbana get nostalgic for fall
Dolce & Gabbana scored with the most powerfully emotional show of the week. The entire audience was completely verklempt and near tears–from the swell of the soundtrack (Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman’s romantic duet in Moulin Rouge) to the beautifully-shot black and white slo-mo film that paid homage to the craftsmanship of the atelier. The […]

Dispatches from Milan: A kerfuffle at Cavalli, ’70s glam at Gucci, bell bottoms at Pucci and more
Okay, while there’s a big kerfuffle going on at Roberto Cavalli (I ‘m hearing it’s over Lindsay Lohan, and Courtney Love) let me take a minute and think way back to see if I can possibly absorb all I’ve seen today and yesterday. Since I last blogged, I’ve been to showrooms, presentations and shows too numerous to list. Here are some highlights:

Milan: Structure and (fabulous) oddball colour combos at Marni
Sunday morning at 9 is always one of the best fashion shows in town–on and off the runway. Marni-a-holics dress in all their kooky layers and come out to pray at the church of Consuelo Castiglioni! This season’s show didn’t disappoint the faithful, but had a much more structured and architectural feeling than past seasons. […]

Dispatches from Milan: Waiting for Etro, the shoe showroom scramble and swaggering coats at MaxMara
Waiting at Etro, lulled by the comfy Etro print seat cushions, classical music and the fact that I slept only one hour last night. (That evil 2nd night jet lag gets me every time.) It’s shoe showroom day in Milan, which means I’m gonna fly by the seat of my leather leggings to as many showrooms as possible, squeezed in between a gazillion shows.

Dispatches from Milan: Butterscotch leather at Ferré, chatting with Rachel Zoe, and a bowl of spaghetti rosa
Packed about 3 days worth of shows and re-sees into today so forgive me if I’m a bit loopy! One thing’s for sure– jet lag is a luxury I can’t afford to indulge in, but my bed is calling me so here are just a few morsels before I call it a day:
Cranky buyers and editors are complaining bitterly about the (even) shorter Milan schedule–its actually nuts, even for a fashion crazed high-energy type-A like me!
From early-morning dominatrixes at Dsquared, all the way through to futuristic tartans at Jil Sander tonight, it was run run run. I think next season I’ll need a chopper.

Milan: Alberta Ferretti’s discreet and delicate fall show
Discreet and delicate was name of the game at Alberta Ferretti, where standout pieces include a camel princess coat embellished with quiet fur cuffs and crystal trim. Whisper thin sheer nude sleeves peaking out from under light, embellished dresses makes me think of figure skating costumes. It would be a shame if one of the […]

Milan: Early-morning dominatrixes at Dsquared
Carmen Kass opened and closed the Dsquared show, where models descended from an elevator shaft in dominatrix wear–hardcore black leather and chains, feathers, red lips and latex! At 9 a.m. Feeling fresher were their boxy charcoal suits and camel fox furs. Gold-medal snowboarder Shaun White was front row!

Milan: Colour-blocked furs at Fendi
There were gorgeous colour-blocked furs at Fendi–in the opening black, white and grey coat or a long multi-hued brown vest. Another look to loveo: the belted loden coat over a long ochre full skirt. The Fendi boot was a wicked take on galoshes, in suede or ostrich. With a high heel of course!

Milan: It’s après-ski time with D&G’s alpine knits
Stefano and Domenico went uphill with a downhill collection full of Nordic knits and great foxy furs at D&G. Fur bloomers not your thing? No worries–you can try them in cable knit! Shaggy fur leg warmers stomped down the runway with head-to-toe knit bodysuits. The designers also threw velvet, and a chiffon calla lily print […]

Milan: Miuccia does subversive ’60s at Prada
The walls and floors at the Prada venue were covered with old-school rules: “Daily brushing makes your hair grow faster” and “never brush your hair wet and never comb it dry.” In the show itself, there was ’60s finery with Miuccia’s subversive sexy edge–fab printed full-skirt frocks, cat-eye glasses, cable girls, caramel colours and…rubber! Accessories […]
