Fashion loves: Anna Sui
Photography by Carlo Mendoza Anna Sui Dolly Girl Lipsticks ($27 each, at Shoppers Drug Mart). The babushka packaging is so endearing, we’d buy all three limited-edition tubes just so we could line them up like vodka shots and tell them about our day.

Makeup artist Lori Taylor dishes on Betty White’s lipstick
Photography by Christopher Polk/Getty Images Hearing about makeup artists’ brushes with celebrities—especially if they’re slightly salacious—is often the cherry on top of the conversation. Smashbox pro lead artist Lori Taylor’s stories weren’t dishy, but that didn’t make me love them any less when she was in town last week to preview the brand’s Fall 2010 launches. Given that the company’s roots are in Los Angeles—the line was created to meet the demands of shoots at a photo studio of the same name—Taylor runs into the Hollywood elite frequently. When she mentioned she had been doing touch-ups at the recent MTV Movie Awards, of course I had to press for names. None were too impressive, but the one that did make me squeal out loud was the mention of the last living Golden Girl, Betty White.

The explanation to why there have been so many resort shows this year has been twittering about the blogosphere. It’s simple, according to The Wall Street Journal‘s Christina Binkley: Anna Wintour asked for them. [Fashionologie]

Beauty closet confidential: obsessed with chunky lip pencils in hot pink
Photography by Kira Crugnale GOOP-y may be Lainey Gossip’s nickname for Gwyneth but it’s also the reason I never wear lipgloss (with the exclusion of NARS’ Lip Lacquer—it’s in a class all its own). I’m also not down with lip stains; there’s something about applying an item that’s a close cousin to a magic marker that doesn’t sit well with me. For a good shot of colour, a berry lipstick is my go-to but once summer hits, it seems fitting that it take some time off. That’s why I find myself gravitating towards lip crayons in hot pink. They’re like diet lipstick—same punch of colour but they feel less heavy handed on.

The daily steal: Lip colour palette, $11
Around the office, I am well known as a full-fledged, card-carrying lipstick junkie. Burgundy? Fuchsia? Cherry red? Neon orange? I’ve got ’em. The latest addition to my lippie library is the Lip edition of cheapie (and cult) beauty brand E.L.F.‘s (Eyes Lips Face) Beauty Encyclopedia ($11, at Zellers). The palette of 12 lipsticks, two glosses […]

Dick Page: Beauty hero
The first time I interviewed makeup artist Dick Page was in 2004. I had sent emails to him asking for a phone interview and assumed they had just gone into a black hole where requests from Canadian editors went to die. But while working late one night, my phone rang. When I answered, the voice on the other end announced, “Hi Lesa, it’s Dick Page” and I managed to not fall out of my chair. Hearing him describe makeup inspirations and applications was unlike anything I’d ever encountered; it was poetic. I even put my head down on my desk afterwards, the experience was so enthralling. (I’m a dork. So be it).
A few weeks ago at New York Fashion Week, I finally came face to face with the man.

Well red
This season, the archetypal red lip is exceedingly versatile. In many textural permutations, from matte to gloss, each crimson hue reflects a different undertone—be it berry, black, blue, orange or fuchsia. After its display of cosmetic dominance on the Fall 2009 runways, there’s no sidestepping this principal shade. Rouge is the right choice.
After the jump you can check out a slideshow of the new reds, find out our favourite shades and get makeup artist advice on how to wear them. {Back to FALL 2009 BEAUTY GUIDE}
