Size matters for Fall 2012; volume has been turned up and proportions maximized. Boxier silhouettes, broad shoulders, and architectural layers come together to create striking visuals in our October issue.

On the runways, we saw Comme Des Garçons create a whole new body shape (think: human gingerbread man), Mugler restructured the peplum to add some renewed intrigue to the trend, and Pheobe Philo for chose to supersize her collection for Celine with coats of epic proportions.

It’s no secret that we’re all a little fixated with the styles of the past. Each season, a reference (or many) to full skirts, bellbottoms, or drop waists pops up on the runway, and we embrace it with a fresh new take on how to dress it up. Riffing on the past without looking like you came out of a time machine though—therein lies the rub. Before you delve into your old gems, take a look at how the style icons of today have interpreted the icons of days gone by.

When we asked you if you’d wear Dolce & Gabbana’s (admittedly challenging) extreme shoulders, the answer was a resounding “No,” but we’ve found one lovely who carries off the look with aplomb.
