Afternoon beauty fix: Your skincare routine can also be vegan-friendly and gluten-free
I’ve made a dietary transition from vegetarian to vegan, and now my cosmetic consumption needs to follow suit. I need to find a cream that’s animal by-product free—got any guidelines? Creams are generally constructed by two things: oil and an aqueous liquid, like water. For a very long time it was common for cosmetic giants […]

Afternoon beauty fix: When soapy scents don’t make sense for your skin
I’m trying to live as “green” as possible, which includes ditching my usual shower products for more eco-friendly options. Is there a body wash that is natural and will moisturize my dry skin through the winter? Soap to cleanse your body needs only to be simple—those scented like “strawberries and cream” or “chocolate soufflé” are […]

Afternoon beauty fix: Taking Argan oil from hair to face
I love Argan oil for my hair and I’ve heard it’s also great for skin. However, I’m not ready to take the plunge and slather it all over my face. How can I ease it into my skincare routine? Argan oil has been growing in popularity over the last few years—along with a whole other […]

Afternoon beauty fix: Does the pill affect your daily SPF?
I’m really cautious with my SPF protection but I’ve recently learned that oral contraceptives may increase my susceptibility to sun damage. Should I dial up the level of SPF I use? We’re seriously not being too strict when we say regardless of anything else, you should be applying some sort of sun protection every day, […]

5 beauty tips from Kim Cattrall
Photography by JJ Thompson Last night, the 3rd Annual P&G Beauty & Grooming Awards, which recognizes fashion and beauty editorial work in Canada, was held at the Carlu in Toronto. Kim Cattrall played the role of graceful emcee, and we were pleased to be called to stage not once but twice. Our fashion director Susie Sheffman won for best fashion editor, and this very site took the award for best beauty or fashion website!
However, that’s not all we went home with. Before the show, we sat down with Cattrall and uncovered a few of her favourite beauty tips and tricks:

Afternoon beauty fix: Clearing up a debate on the causes of clear skin
A friend of mine insists her clear skin is from never wearing foundation. Is this the truth and, if so, should I stop using it? Likely, no. There are many other factors at play—such as hormones, genetics, environmental surroundings, and diet—that would affect your skin more than eight hours of foundation wear. Plus, it sounds […]

Afternoon beauty fix: How to keep your soft, summer legs all winter long
Ever since I traded in bare legs and skirts for long pants and wool socks, my legs feel dry, itchy, and are ridden with little red bumps. How can I salvage them between now and next summer? In our opinion, there’s nothing worse than itchy thighs and flaky calves. Zoolander nearly had it right when […]

Power tools: Meet the new guard of plugged-in beauty treatments
Ever since their invention, cellphones and computer hard drives have been shedding their clunky forms as if mimicking Bill Gates’s eyewear evolution from giant geek frames to rimless spectacles. But it took a diy movement to kick-start the same downsizing in the beauty world, allowing popular in-office technology to come home with us. We were able to take matters such as hair removal and wrinkle fighting into our own hands when IPL (intense pulsed light) and led (light-emitting diodes) were incorporated into handheld devices we could use ourselves. That meant zero downtime for us and our bank accounts. Here, a look at 2.0 versions of trusted favourites, as well as some new tools to add to your workbench.

The secret behind Kate Middleton’s royal glow—it’s oxygen!
Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images While her innate (and stylist-less) understanding of style, designers, and affordable glamour remains myth-like, Kate Middleton’s skincare routine is not a complete mystery—she confessed in a recent Vogue UK interview that she swears by Karin Herzog products. So when I heard that the Swiss brand was coming to Montreal, I had to get the inside scoop on her royal glow.
