Love braided hair but unable to DIY it? Get ready: Braid bars are coming to Toronto
Braided hairstyles of all complexities have reigned supreme on the runways and red carpets for what seems like forever. Childhood memories aside, the current iteration of braids started around Spring 2010 (thanks Alexander Wang and Oscar de la Renta, to name a few) and the style has continued to grow season after season. This ongoing trend has cued the arrival of braid bars—a special salon that has perfected the art of braiding—in New York and Los Angeles, and now they’re coming to Toronto.
Marc Anthony Salons in Toronto just announced that they will now offer a special braid menu to customers. The styles range from a basic French braid band to more complex plaits such as fishtails, waterfalls and a fully braided halo updo. Meaning, for those without the dexterity or patience to attempt DIY braiding, on-trend holiday party hair just got a whole lot easier. And affordable: Braid bar prices start at $20.

Toronto: Jessica Biffi Spring 2010
Jessica Biffi’s Spring 2010 show opened with a glow-in-the-dark spray paint dress that looked as though it was crafted from layered vertical blinds. The dress appeared again in peach, a strong point in a raver-inspired collection that seemed to be made up entirely of jumpsuits. (Okay, not entirely, but a third of it at least.) There were pastel knee-length jersey options, a gold micro-sequin onesie with blousy strapless top, a hot pink short suit that let the model’s breasts hang out (intentionally, I’m afraid), a low-cut pantsuit in a shiny zebra/leopard burn-out fabric that also showed up on a few dresses, and an acid green hooded shortie with pleating details–the best of the bunch. Pleats echoed the shingle effect of the first dress, appearing as a peplum bustier or a hot pink mini-skirt. The most beautiful example was a pleated teacup skirt with shimmering ivory tiers–its stiff, swinging movement glowed in an entirely different way.

Toronto: Lucian Matis Spring 2010
A music box played a delicate, haunting tune fit for a twirling plastic ballerina and immediately the tone was set—circus-meets-Roman warrior princess—at Lucian Matis’ Spring 2010 show. With the models’ heads encased in stud-embellished gear, an eerie ambience of bondage was piled on top of a feminine colour palette of soft blush pink, cream, and slate. The collection remained cohesive while juggling textures (sequins, mesh, and satin) and asymmetrical cuts for a raw feminine appeal. Our favourite details? The metal armour-inspired necklaces and pink netting that played peekaboo from skirt hemlines. Save for a couple printed fabrics that were borderline tacky, Matis’ finely-draped gowns were executed in the most elegant manner.
