Toronto shop notes: Alpine escapade
Judging from the selection of chunky cable knits, Fair Isle patterns, and fisherman sweaters spotted this fall, designers like Sonia Rykiel and Jil Sander’s Raf Simons are ready for an alpine escapade. Channel the cabin-fever craze with a Nordic knit, like this one by Mac & Jac ($80, at Sears), paired with stovepipe trousers and chunky boots.

Q&A: 5 minutes with J.Crew
Finally, our fashion prayers have been answered. J.Crew (jcrew.com), the famous American prepster palace, is opening its first Canadian store this month in the newly renovated Yorkdale Shopping Centre. (Can I get an amen?) Here, the ever-stylish Jenna Lyons, a.k.a. J.Crew’s president and executive creative director, talks fall must-haves and brand power.
Why did J.Crew decide to launch in Canada this year?
“We saw an increased level of traffic to our website from Canada. There was definitely a following [and] it was a natural progression. And fall is a great time to enter into a new country.” -
Vancouver: 5 minutes with Granted’s knitwear guru, Minoru Hirano
By Jennie Jin
Our Vancouver office got much toastier when Minoru Hirano, owner of Granted Clothing (grantedclothing.com), stopped by recently with a bag full of wooly goodies. A local family company that offers an array of knitted sweaters, toques, mittens, vests– even leg warmers, all of which are handmade in Vancouver. The company’s dedication to local business has led them to collaborate with the likes of the Canucks and Canadian brands Skull Skates and Sitka (skateboarding and surf gear, respectively). We asked Hirano about joining the family business and keeping things local.

The daily steal: Bunny sweater, $90
When you think “bunny sweater,” it’s unlikely that you imagine the big, graphic rabbit emblazoned on this slouchy cozy sweater ($90) from London-based designer Peter Jensen’s collabo with Urban Outfitters–more fit for an après ski soiree than an “Ugly Christmas Sweater” party.

The daily steal: Sequined sweater, $59
When I was in Vancouver checking out Joe Fresh Style’s sleek new Granville Street flagship, I picked up this camel and gold sequined sweater ($59, joe.ca). The daily steal: Merino wool sweater, $51
I’ve got a bit of a problem with sweatshirts at the moment–buying them that is–which is why I love this merino wool sweater from J.Crew ($51, jcrew.com). It’s got the slouch and athletic styling of a favourite fleece, but pair it with a pencil skirt and it’s perfect for the office.
