ICYMI, the past couple of years have seen a total and complete resurgence of the ’90s. Beauty trends like brown lipstick and hair gems are cool once again, and we definitely aren’t mad about it! That being said, the ’90s were also full of questionable beauty choices: blue eyeshadow and mismatching lipliner, anyone? #tbt To commemorate arguably […]
Recently I’ve gone on a full-out binge of Friends, the much-loved ’90s sitcom, and in turn, have reignited my appreciation for the characters’ wardrobes. The show is timeless, entertaining and filled with so many epic looks: Overalls, vests, crop tops and maxi dresses. It’s a fashion feast of everything that my younger self thought I’d be […]
As grown-ass women interested in looking good, you’ve probably asked this question at one point: “Am I too old to wear that?” Are we too old for those boots, or those shorts, that crop-top, or those accessories? Are we too old for glitter and green lipstick or pastel hair? Are we too old to wear […]
I was ten years old in 1995, which meant I was finally old enough to understand the impact of pop culture (like, sort of). Toy Story opened in December, and that summer, I’d started collecting Babe toys from McDonalds; school was defined by betting (and losing) my collection of Pocahontas and Casper Pogs, and Now […]
When I was growing up, I wasn’t allowed to watch The X-Files. My parents claimed it was too scary for my over sensitive baby-child ears, so my first interaction with Mulder and Scully was when they guest-starred on The Simpsons, long after their series premiere. But even then, Scully’s power wasn’t lost on me. Dana […]
As a kid growing up in the ‘90s, Beverly Hills 90210 basically informed my being. I didn’t understand it fully (I was only five years old when the show debuted), but I knew my all-important basics: to be blond and named Kelly was a good thing, to be brunette automatically meant you were misunderstood. Oh, […]
The bandana has long been a go-to accessory and it pops in and out of mainstream culture like a fashionable friend you only catch up with every couple of years. The ’90s was the bandana’s heyday, and artists like 2Pac and Aaliyah will be forever synonymous with the accessory. Of course, the rest of us followed in […]
In case you missed the memo, the 1990s are back in a big way. Minimalist and grunge designs have dominated the catwalk for spring (and fall!) and unsurprisingly this trend has crossed over into beauty as well. 1990s beauty is tricky in that it can easily go from relaxed to messy. So how do you try the 1990s beauty trend without looking like Courtney Love’s darker days?
We posed the question to our Beauty Panel this week and they came back with some surprising and innovative tips for the ’90s trend. From statement lips to smoky eyes, our Beauty Panel bloggers had lots of interesting makeup ideas to share.
Challenge 5: 1990s beauty is on trend for spring. How are you incorporating the ’90s look with your hair and makeup? See the answers now! »
As our Spring 2013 fashion and beauty trend reports show, 1990s style is experiencing quite the resurgence right now. Plaids, slip dresses, grown-out roots and faded florals all mark this return to grunge—and where fashion leads, pop culture follows. (Also, the fact that online editor Randi Bergman has been live-tweeting her way through every original 90210 episode on Netflix may have something to do with it…) It’s nearly impossible to visit your favourite website without coming across a ’90s reference, and as such we’ve rounded up 16 of the the best links to prove 1990s style is here to stay—for a season or two, at least.

Today’s retro photo unearthing is worthy of many OMGs! Thanks to Retronaut (our new favourite site, FYI) and photographer Geoff Marchant, we’ve been treated to a look at what Victoria Beckham looked like before she was a Spice Girl/wife of a soccer babe/successful designer/mother of many/super human, and let’s just say they are a trip. Back in 1992—just four years before The Spice Girls released their epic first single “Wannabe”—Victoria Beckham was just Victoria Adams, looking to have some glamour shots taken for her dance and modelling portfolio. Likely inspired by many popular styles of the day, Posh Spice, then 17 indulges in some endearing yet cringe-worthy poses varying from The Flashdance Chair-Crawl, to The Casual Side Boob Flash, to The Glamazon Glove Glance. While there’s so much that has changed about Posh from then to now (you’ll forgive us for not enumerating the speculates), we love this peek at her early years—especially at that amazingly crimped hair.
Katy Perry was in Tokyo yesterday for the Japanese premiere of her film Part of Me and while there she decided to indulge in some incredible nail art. In a very ’90s nostalgia move, Katy Perry had the faces of nine characters from the cult MTV animated series Daria painted on her nails. This unexpected manicure got us thinking of what other ’90s icons we’d like to see Katy Perry try:
1. The ultimate boy band rivalry: Backstreet Boys on one hand and *NSYNC on the other. Conveniently these groups had five members apiece, so there’s no need to fight over whether Justin or Nick get top placement.
