FASHION plates: Gone tribal
By Randi Bergman and Jordan Porter
The seemingly never-ending delay to summer has us day dreaming of a getaway to the most exotically out-of-the-way locales. We want to feel the warmth of the scorching sun on our spf’d faces and feel the rains down in Africa, we want to show off our bronzed bods in electric brights and the boldest of graphic prints, and dance to the rhythm of a tribal beat. Alas, an across the world sojourn is not in our future, but while we wait for summer to show, there’s no stopping us from going global when it comes to retail therapy.

The local titan: Boutique Denis Gagnon opens in Old Montreal
From the opening of his new boutique to his upcoming collaborations, it seems that Montreal titan Denis Gagnon (along with his signature thick black Lanvin frames) is just about everywhere these days. “You certainly are a man with vision, just how strong are those glasses anyway?” I asked him last week at the opening party for his new boutique in Old Montreal. Be it modesty or my seriously awful French, Gagnon just shrugged.

Montreal fashion week is strutting an eager new February time slot (sayonara March!) that puts the city’s Semaine de la mode literally at the forefront of fashion ⎯ starting the 2011 fashion cycle ahead of New York. Montreal: 5 minutes with Rad Hourani
Stylist turned designer Rad Hourani (radhourani.com) has a cult following for his unisex, seasonless clothing, sold at Reborn (231 St-Paul St. W., Suite 100, 514-499-8549, reborn.ws). He recently debuted a fragrance, and is launching a shoe collaboration with Aldo. Although the Montreal expat now commutes between Paris and New York (but manufactures his lines here), he says the universe is his home. It’s true—he’s out of this world.

The daily steal: Velvet shoe, $80
We have a major crush on velvet this week, so of course we fell in love with these peep-toe beauties from Aldo ($80, aldoshoes.com). They come in black as well, but it’s hard to resist a tall glass of burgundy.

The daily steal: Fleece-lined booties, $140
Like the short-sleeve coat, one would never expect a creation like the high-heel utilility boot to work. Yet somehow, through the alchemy of fashion, it does–as evidenced by these fleece-lined beauties from Aldo ($140, aldoshoes.com).
