Marc Jacobs Replicates the Iconic Perry Ellis Collection That Got Him Fired
Perry Ellis is a brand undoubtedly for the preps. From their collared shirts to classic sportswear, it exudes a sort of squeaky-clean All-American vibe. And in terms of design, they’ve always leant on the side of tradition, the side of safety… that is, until Marc Jacobs’ infamous Spring Summer 1993 collection. Jacobs was hired as […]

Doutzen Kroes Is Part Supermodel Part Super Hero
When Doutzen Kroes picks up the phone, her voice is breathy and has a faint Dutch accent that makes the letter “v” tumble out of her mouth as a pillowy “f.” It’s the kind of posh international accent you’d expect from one of the top supermodels of her generation. What’s equally charming is the casual […]

See Arthur Elgort’s iconic photography » For every ten interviews you’ve read online, at least five start with “we were lucky enough to meet..,” right? The week in celebrity style: See who made our top 10 best dressed
See the week’s best celebrity style »
With so many parties, galas and movie screenings this past week, celebrities everywhere were dressed to the nines in spring attire, giving us plenty of fashion eye candy and outfit inspiration to last the weekend.
Earlier this week, the Time 100 Gala was held in New York City and celebrated the 100 most influential people—and some of the most stylish, we might add. Although Beyoncé was not in attendance (insert sad face emoji), red carpet beauties like Carrie Underwood and Christy Turlington stunned us with their sartorial choices. Also there to accept an honourable mention was Amy Adams, who did no wrong in the fashion department, wearing a sleeveless column dress with copper embroidery, which complemented her iconic red hair.

The wild ones: The undeniable, indelible influence of the ’90s supermodels returns to the runways
See the ’90s Supermodels look on the 2013 runways »
Fierceness, thy name is Naomi. And Linda. And Cindy. Recognized in fashion circles by their first names alone, ’90s supermodels are the latest icons to ride the decade’s wave of nostalgia into our already punk-, grunge- and angst-heavy wardrobes.
Known now as the Supers, the larger-than-life model pack fronted by Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington ruled not only the runway but the cultural zeitgeist as well. They were everywhere, starring in George Michael’s epic “Freedom 90” music video, appearing in a Time Magazine cover story, even launching a chain of Fashion Cafes. And while they wore everything from skin-tight Alaïa bandage dresses to Versace scarf print leggings, their look was ultimately defined by a 1991 photo shoot that captured the high-impact collision between the supermodel phenomenon and the moto trend. Lensed by Peter Lindbergh for Vogue, it featured a Marlon Brando-meets-Madonna blend of hardware-heavy motorcycle jackets, ball skirts and pleated minis with embellished leather caps and Chanel pearls.

They said/We said: About Face, a new documentary about supermodels reveals what it’s like behind the scenes
We all know modeling has always been somewhat of a controversial issue. Retailers are often criticized for their depiction of the female body—just yesterday Jezebel recently reported that fast-fashion empire H&M digitally produces the models’ bodies on their website and sticks on a real person’s head in post production. There’s also the whole “do models really eat?” issue, which recently made headlines when Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima revealed her diet prior to the big VS fashion show. A new documentary About Face, premiering at Sundance next month, is also making headlines for its gritty portrayal of how supermodels like Christie Brinkley, Jerry Hall, Cheryl Tiegs and Christy Turlington were treated during the peak of their careers in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

They said/We said: Why Julia Roberts’s and Christy Turlington’s L’Oréal ads have gotten the axe
L’Oréal ads featuring Julia Roberts and Christy Turlington have been pulled in the U.K. following pressure from politician Jo Swinson and the intervention of Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The cosmetics company was accused of digitally altering images of the women advertising Lancôme and Maybelline anti-aging products. Although Swinson is an advocate for realistic, healthy beauty in advertising, her complaint against L’Oréal was based on the ads’ failure to reflect what the products could actually achieve.
In regard to the Maybelline ad (featuring Turlington), L’Oréal admitted that it had “digitally retouched to lighten the skin, clean up makeup, reduce dark shadows and shading around the eyes, smooth the lips and darken the eyebrows,” but felt that the photograph was still representative of the product’s achievable results. The company even supplied the ASA with red-carpet photos of Roberts and Turlington in order to show that the women are naturally beautiful. However, the authority’s request for pre-production photos wasn’t granted due to legal restrictions.
Controversy over retouching is nothing new. Last year, retailer Jacob announced that it would no longer alter the bodies of its models in an effort to promote a healthy body image. The issue with the L’Oréal ads, however, seems to be more about false advertising than unattainable ideals of beauty.
