How Beauty Brands Are Rising to the Challenge of Eco-Conscious Packaging and Zero-Waste Products
The aspirational “zero-waste” lifestyle is nothing new; it was pioneered more than a decade ago by California blogger Bea Johnson, famous for fitting a year’s worth of household garbage into a single quart jar. Lately, however, going zero-waste has taken on fresh urgency as we collectively confront the state of our planet and companies across […]

How Beauty Brands are Taking a More Sustainable Approach to Packaging and Products
From ingredient sourcing to sustainable packaging, here’s how the industry’s forward thinkers are striving to tread more lightly as they produce the beauty products you see on the shelves. RETHINK (INGREDIENTS) The fine print on beauty labels tells us next to nothing about how responsibly sourced ingredients are. To muddy matters, calculating a product’s eco-footprint […]

The Beauty Brands Stepping Up Their Recycling Game for Earth Day

Brands are finally coming up […]

Three Face Masks That Don’t Go Into Landfill After One Use
Few things equate with the spirit of self-care like a good sheet mask. On top of coercing active ingredients into the depths of our pores, they double as a veritable “Do Not Disturb” sign for our faces, fending off unwanted conversations and broadcasting to others that whatever household chore may require attention right now must […]

Considering the switch to eco-friendly makeup and skincare? Introducing luxury beauty e-boutique Clementine Fields
With recent reports of favourite lipstick brands containing worrying amounts of lead, there’s no better a time to consider the switch to eco-friendly beauty products. And for those obsessed with online shopping, buying all-natural and organic beauty products just got a whole lot easier: a new online beauty boutique, Clementine Fields, opened to the public last week.
The Toronto-based site offers a range of all-natural and organic beauty products for skin, hair, face and body—and ships directly to doorsteps across North America. (Plus, free shipping for Canadian customers making orders over $50!) What makes Clementine Fields stand out from other online beauty shops is its selection: the well-curated list of luxury brands all meet the standards of the Enviornmental Working Group, an American watchdog group that monitors toxic ingredients in products, among other eco concerns.
In terms of available brands, Clementine Fields include fan favourites like Tata Harper and One Love Organics but we’re most excited about their exclusive-to-Canada offerings.

Nature’s whimsy can be utterly charming—like sunshine when it rains. Whimsy is less than charming, however, when it comes to crafting high-quality, high-performance skincare and cosmetics from natural ingredients. Synthetics win in terms of stability and reliability over plant-based products that lack quality controls. But despite the complexities involved in formulating with naturals, more and more cosmetic chemists are enjoying the creative challenge. Our payoff is more—and better—eco-friendly beauty products we want to use.
The Custom Manufacturer
Mark Rival developed one of Canada’s better-known natural skincare brands—though its name can’t be revealed as the custom-formulation industry is highly competitive and secretive. The president and chief formulator for Leslie Cosmetics, an Ontario custom manufacturer of prestige personal-care products, Rival’s work with that brand and the success he’s watched it achieve have profoundly affected how he formulates overall. Consider him the stealth game-changer, steering skincare in a more natural direction one client at a time. “It’s convinced me to look into alternative raw materials, natural and certified organic alternatives for all new products,” he says. -
National treasures: Over the past 35 years, these Canadian innovators have been making their beauty mark at home and abroad
To coincide with FASHION’s 35th anniversary we’re taking a look back at some Canadian beauty trailblazers that have made waves throughout the country and abroad over the past 35 years. Brands such as M.A.C, Ojon, Moroccanoil and Cargo may have started small, but are now recognized around the globe and have been providing consumers with makeup products and tips for decades. Talent-wise, from Kristjan Hayden to Grace Lee to Greg Wencel (and more!), Canadian-born hairstylists and makeup artists have left their mark on top brands and stars—including Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gisele and Kristen Stewart. And the ever-growing green beauty industry is yet another area that Canadians excel at: brands like RMS Beauty, Consonant and Bite Beauty & Sula are getting noticed for their eco-friendly and all-natural approach.
