To say that Sandra Sing Fernandes is passionate about fashion, art and design is an understatement.  The founder and director of Edmonton Fashion Week has been involved in nearly every facet of the art and fashion worlds—she’s worked as a model, dancer, milliner, jewellery and clothing designer and fashion show producer. I caught up with Fernandes to talk about her hopes for Edmonton’s growing fashion scene.

I am feeling a little faint, my heart is pounding inside my chest, my hands have started to tremble and I am using every ounce of will power I have to prevent myself from jumping up and down and screaming.  No, I have not just won the lottery, it’s something even better: I just finished a phone call with Claire Salaysay, Southgate Centre’s (780-435-3721, southgate.shopping.ca) marketing director, where she rhymed off the shops that will be part of Southgate’s 155,000-square foot expansion. 

When it comes to fashion in the prairies, Henry Singer is king.  So, it should come as no surprise that Jordan Singer (president of the Henry Singer Fashion Group and the late Mr Singer’s grandson) is the indisputable crown prince of suits, denim and all things menswear.  As the legend goes, Henry Singer launched an eponymous clothing shop, specializing in contemporary men’s apparel, in 1938 with only $300 in his pocket.  Since then the Henry Singer retail empire has continued to flourish and now encompasses three distinct clothing stores.

An expanding waistline is never a good thing unless, of course, you are pregnant.  Yo Mama Maternity Boutique (10122-124 St, 780-488-0040, yomamamaternity.com) is where you’ll find Edmonton’s soignée moms-to-be (the ones who wouldn’t dare think of covering up their yoga-toned prenatal bodies with shapeless frocks or oversized T-shirts) skillfully navigating the racks of fashion savvy maternity clothes from much sought-after brands including Ripe, Olian, Love My Belly, Inca Mama and Jules et Jim.

Expect the unexpected while admiring the exquisite selection of home decor at The Tin Box (10512-82 Ave., 780-436-2006). If you can peel yourself away from all the kitchen gadgets and picture frames, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an impressive collection of locally designed jewellery.

This news has been bouncing around for a while now, but it seems to have hit critical mass in the last couple of days, because now we have a date: Rejoice, oh lovers of achingly pretty Victorian-boho chic, Anthropologie is coming to Canada on April 22.

Local designers and boutiques are getting ready to show their Fall 2009 offerings at Edmonton Fashion Week (April 2 to 9, from $15, 780-420-1757, tixonthesquare.ca, or at the door. Visit edmontonfashionweek.ca). The shows at the Transalta Arts Barns (10330-84 Ave.) will feature new talent from the University of Alberta’s Textiles and Clothing program, along with EFW regulars like Stanley Carroll, Nokomis and C’est Sera.
