My father, the skin-care guru
By Allyssia Alleyne
My father is the biggest skin-care nut I know. No, he’s not a dermatologist. And, no, he doesn’t work in the beauty industry. His obsession started when he tried a few of my mom’s products, and now his interest in them far surpasses hers. Amazed by the results, he wanted to see what else a little extra attention could do for his skin. I know mothers are typically the ones who teach their daughters about beauty, but it my was dad who taught me the value of a good toner, the zit-fighting power of toothpaste, and how wonderful it feels to steam your face over a sink of hot water (along with showing me how to scramble eggs and throw a punch). So, in honour of Father’s Day, here are five of my most-loved products that my dad introduced me to.

This documentary has it in the bag. (Sorry.)
Betcha never knew that sperm wear chinos. Even the miracle of life needs a makeover today. Discovery Channel’s The Great Sperm Race (airs June 21, discoverychannel.ca), a British-Canadian co-production is inspired by the fact that any given ejaculation can produce 250 million sperm, but only one “winner” will meet the egg. The squiggly journey of sperm through the female reproductive system is blown up into live-action battlefield proportions. The tongue-in-cheek, albeit factual, approach involves auditing your average couple getting down to business while actor/sperm—millions of them—wait down there in the dangling meatballs, preparing for battle.

Vancouver: Four Father’s Day finds
If your dad is anything like mine, he can be trouble to buy for. To help you in your quest for the perfect Father’s Day gift, I’ve detailed a few great finds from around Vancouver:
Bailey of Hollywood’s Sydney (above, $109), is the perfect hat for a dapper dad. Available at Granville Island’s emporium of headpieces, Edie Hats (1666 Johnston St., Suite 4 The Netloft, Granville Island 604-683-4280), this panama hat is woven from toquilla palm fibers and features a teardrop crown and a rich navy sash. Definitely a piece from dad’s wardrobe that I would borrow!
