September may host some of the biggest fashion weeks—London, New York, Paris, and Milan—but come October, it’s Toronto’s time to shine. Considering that Toronto is the home of the second biggest North American fashion week, it goes without saying that the city hosts an influx of shows, parties and fashionable events. From World MasterCard Fashion Week to The ShOws to the just-announced The Collections, there’s so much going on between October 15-26. As the event calendar starts to build (and explode) we’ll keep updating this guide to Toronto Fashion Week—so check back often and stay in the loop.

TFW Diary: Monochromatic prints and patterns at Laura Siegel
View the full collection »
See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »Amidst a young-guns-filled schedule yesterday afternoon, Laura Siegel proved she’s just as smoking as the rest. What makes Siegel’s work stand out are her partnerships with artisans around the world, including those who specialize in Ajrakh block printing, Indian embroidery, Keralan natural dying, and Bolivian knitting. Siegel’s approach is to develop textured pieces while enabling those in third world countries to display their uniquely creative skills on an international stage. The result is a collection that’s sleek and minimalist in structure with a tinge of “weathered global activist” aesthetic.

TFW diary: Barefoot, shipwrecked, and deconstructed at Laura Siegel
Laura Siegel’s barefooted models looked as if they belonged very far away from October in Toronto yesterday—a Mediterranean beach was certainly more their speed. But in ultra-drapey, soft-hued pieces with a worn-in, slightly deconstructed touch, they looked more shipwrecked than beach vacationing. I was thrilled to see a return of Siegel’s coveted knitwear—lighter than last spring’s collection, considering the season, but perfectly executed with a casual, purposefully undone look. Printed, full length body suits and separates walked down the runway, and were followed by gauze-like wide-leg pants and whisper-thin maxi skirts, fringed arm and leg bands, and athletic-inspired shoulder-less henleys—each outfit had in common a ubiquitous white scarf-like headband tied around each head. Lord of the Flies at its best, and with easy warm-weather wearability, a step in the right direction for this LG Fashion Week newbie.
