Chloé and Parris Gordon may have swapped their collection’s name, but its cool chick message was just as strong as ever last night at the Beaufille Spring 2014 debut during World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto. Using the word “renaissance” to describe their brand’s rebirth as well as a period of reference, the collection blended old-world richness (think teeny chain links and custom print silk patterns) with the slinky styling of a Scarface Michelle Pfeiffer alongside a live set by local psych garage rock band, Shakinghands.

It’s likely that if you live in Toronto, have any semblance of interest in the fashion industry, you have at least heard murmurs of the talented sister designer duo Chloé and Parris Gordon. Their most recent Fall 2013 collection was received with serious accolades from major fashion editors, giving the 1990s grunge trend a kick with a collection that Courtney Love would definitely rock alongside her Saint Laurent wardrobe. Formerly dubbed Chloé Comme Parris, the pair unveiled an exciting new era for their brand, announcing a surprising name change. Bye bye CCP, hello Beaufille!

Loosely translated as “handsome girl,” the designers’ new monicker encapsulates the androgynous, badass aesthetic that the girls have honed since debuting at Toronto Fashion Week with their Fall 2011 collection. Since then, Chloé (the tomboy of the team who focuses on textiles and garments) and Parris (who crafts the duo’s covetable jewellery and accessories) have continued to impress season after season, solidifying their spot as the go-to local designer for the young fashion set aiming to marry a bit of punk rock with a subtle sensuality. Chloé and Parris emphasize that Beaufille may not be for every woman. “It’s for a specific girl who has an eye for details and construction; something unique and artistic.”

The Gordon sisters have been keeping busy since showing at Toronto Fashion Week last month. The pair debuted an exciting new collaboration, Littledoe x Beaufille alongside Toronto-born accessories designer Chase Cohl (daughter of former Rolling Stones tour manager Michael Cohl) with a celeb-studded bash at Bar Marmont in LA last week, attracting the likes of Gossip Girl Jessica Szhor, fellow celeb-daughter Dakota Johnson (daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith) and the infectiously hilarious Brit Lucy Punch. The collection combines the two brand’s festival-chic aesthetic into a capsule collection which includes printed silk suits, lace minidresses, wide brim hats adorned with edgy chain-detailing and some sick new jewels with an emphasis on rough-hewn diamonds (their diamond rings even double as guitar slides—say whaaa??) Though there are no concrete plans for future collaborations, working with like-minded designers will definitely be an important part of Beaufille’s future. And after this successful first-try, who knows might be hopping on board.

Fashion month may have finally wrapped, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to forget about the trends that emerged for Fall 2013 on the many runways of New York, London, Milan, Paris and Toronto—In fact, it’s time for them to take front and centre. While shoppers everywhere are snapping up the best of the selling floor’s offerings for spring and summer, designers, buyers and editors alike are busy prepping ahead. And since we know y’all like to keep ahead of the curve, we’ve sorted through hundreds of photos and selected 10 of the top Fall 2013 trends so that you can mentally prep (and save) too!

Next season, it’s all about fur, which landed in both faux and real on runways including Marni, JW Anderson, and most strikingly at Fendi, where it was combined in a dizzying multitude of punky ways. The 1990s were back for another resurgence, continuing Spring 2013’s grunge trend at Saint Laurent in Paris and Chloé Comme Parris right here at home. On the street, the look was easily created by many fashion week attendees who layered plaids on waists, under jackets and even on tights. And while practically speaking, it may be no major surprise that outerwear was one of the top Fall 2013 trends, this show season we saw jackets take on new forms with quilting, oversized shapes and bold colours which were mirrored outside the shows, with equally interesting choices hitting the pavement

The makeup: “It’s about society girls gone bad. Rich girls who’ve been partying all night long and their makeup’s been really worn in and lived in and danced in.” —Grace Lee, Maybelline New York lead makeup artist

Skin was evened out with a mixture of Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream and moisturizer. For a dewy, “sweaty” highlight, clear Baby Lips lip balm was rubbed on the high plains of the cheek and the bridge of the nose.

Eyes were lined with a black kohl pencil, then more Baby Lips was pressed right into the liner with a thin brush, to give the effect of a girl who’s been in her makeup all night long. Soon-to-launch pots of Maybelline pigments in “Luxurious Bronze” and “Cashmere Brown” were applied on the lids, with more Baby Lips pressed on top. “It’s all about layering,” said Lee. She had models close their eyes while she held the lids open slightly with her finger so she could apply Rocket Mascara thickly to the top and bottom lashes at the same time, which gave an imperfect look, with smudges left below the eyes. “I want them to look a little bit messy, a little bit off. “ Brows were brushed up but left natural, because “it’s all about the screwed-up eye.”

The dreamy, artsy girl we usually see on Chloé Comme Parris runways showed her tougher, ennui-filled side for Fall 2013 at World Mastercard Fashion Week, slouching aggressively out to the sounds of Nirvana’s “All Apologies.” Nineties grunge reappeared in international Spring 2013 collections and continues to fly its flag into fall with Hedi Slimane’s all too faithful interpretation for Saint Laurent Paris (most of the fashion media wasn’t having it but it gave Courtney Love “gasms” and reminded her of Value Village).

Here, under-25 Toronto sisters Chloé and Parris Gordon applied their own richly detailed aesthetic to classic signifiers like check shirts wrapped around the waists of slips: their dresses are beautifully cut in silk and feature custom 19th century Arts & Crafts-influenced prints (the Gordons’ mom is an enthusiast of the era). Adding to the feeling of rebellious, seething youth were crop tops, patterned thigh-highs, tough leather, army overcoats, vests layered over sheer tunics layered over cropped pants, and dresses slashed across the chest and held together with what looked like metal body piercings.

It’s official, Spring 2013 fashion month is over. And after receiving a daily dose of street style photos and runway updates, it would be silly for us to ignore the trends that we saw day after day (after day, after day). It’s hard not to fall victim to sensory overload, but thankfully our street style photographer, Stefania Yarhi, made it easy for us to pick and choose which trends we know we’ll be seeing all spring long. With hundreds of photos from Paris, Milan, London, New York, and Toronto at our disposal, we just couldn’t ignore the countless graphic tops (a day without a Balenciaga sci-fi sweater sighting was a total shocker), exposed bellies, suits, and mixed prints—so we didn’t because we’re positive they will be huge come Spring 2013. We’ve selected 10 of the biggest fashion trends from the streets and the runways and put them together in one place, so gets to clickin’. The leaves may just be starting to fall, but it’s never too early to plan for spring, right? (RIGHT!)

It was dewy skin like we’ve never seen before for Chloé Comme Parris Spring 2013, where the theme was California’s Venice Beach and models looked like they’d just emerged from the water. “It’s all about layering different kinds of textures to create this really beautiful, metallic skin,” explained M.A.C makeup key Melissa Gibson. To start, she used M.A.C Cosmetics Mineralize Charged Water Face and Body Lotion ($40, maccosmetics.com) followed by Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer ($22, maccosmetics.com)—though dabbed only where necessary. The almost supernatural glow, however, came courtesy of Mineralize Skinfinish in “Soft and Gentle” ($34, maccosmetics.com) which Gibson generously applied with a brush “literally all over the face.”

The twisted sisters behind favourite Toronto-label Chloé Comme Parris were back with a decidedly sunny disposition for Spring 2013, deep diving into California culture last night with their latest show at Toronto Fashion Week. Chloé and Parris Gordon prove their envious skills season after season (need an age refresher? They’re just 24 and 22 respectively), and this time around it was no different.

Opening with the CCP take on the three-piece suit (think neutral-on-neutral and a button-up to boot), the 23-look collection flowed from one to the next with soft shades, airy layers and floral watercolour prints. The duo’s signature double-layer effect was as well done on a navy shirtdress as it was a short pair of slit leather shorts. The piece de resistance, however, was a pale pink motorcycle jacket that featured a thin elastic strap through the back. (Maybe you’d never actually tie a motorcycle jacket up, but hey, it sure looks modern).

Hopefully having a couple of weeks to relax and refresh after the end of Paris Fashion Week did you well, because Fashion Week Spring 2013 continues on. This time the shows are just mere steps from our front doors as Toronto Fashion Week gets underway.

Officially World MasterCard Fashion Week doesn’t start until next week, but that doesn’t mean Fashion Week is already in full swing. Our resident street style photographer Stefania Yarhi was out yesterday snapping all the fashionable Torontonians as they rushed from The Collections to The ShOws. And rush they did! Going from Chloe Comme Parris and Label at the Burroughs Building to Tanya Taylor and Jean-Pierre Braganza at Andrew Richards Design in a small amount of time is no easy feat, but the fashion crowd did their best to not miss these presentations.

September may host some of the biggest fashion weeks—London, New York, Paris, and Milan—but come October, it’s Toronto’s time to shine. Considering that Toronto is the home of the second biggest North American fashion week, it goes without saying that the city hosts an influx of shows, parties and fashionable events. From World MasterCard Fashion Week to The ShOws to the just-announced The Collections, there’s so much going on between October 15-26. As the event calendar starts to build (and explode) we’ll keep updating this guide to Toronto Fashion Week—so check back often and stay in the loop.
