They said/We said: Kanye debuts his collection, anticipates lukewarm reviews, then throws a fit. Natch
It’s no surprise that Kanye West’s debut ready-to-wear collection in Paris on Saturday received mixed reviews. We’re also not surprised that the rapper-come-designer obnoxiously responded to his critics before any reviews of his show were actually published. It’s just his… thing, we guess.
Delivered to partygoers including Karlie Kloss, Lindsay Lohan, and Olivier Theyskens, West whined about the amount of hard labour he had put into his line, and how he’s “different” then other celebrity designers (different i.e. better?). To boot, he mentioned a hope that critics would be “easy” on him, considering it was his first shot out of the gate. “I took out motherf—ing loans to get the best models, to get the best designers, to get the best venue. I gave you everything that I had,” he reportedly added. Can we LOL now, or later?

They said/We said: The dish on Proenza Schouler’s expected new investors
Speculation surrounding a change in Proenza Schouler’s investors has been circulating for quite some time now. That change seems to have been confirmed yesterday by Cathy Horyn of The New York Times. According to the writer, the label’s current backer, the private equity firm Permira (also the primary owner of Valentino), will be selling its shares in the label as early as Friday.
The 45-per-cent stake will reportedly be transferred over to a group of New York investors including Andrew Rosen, CEO of Theory and Helmut Lang. Designers and founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez will likely hold onto their control over the other 55 per cent of the company.
While we’re excited to see what Rosen’s plans are for the brand, we’re hoping that too much doesn’t change. New investors can often demand a lot of designers, but that won’t necessarily be the case with Proenza Schouler. McCollough and Hernadez’s It-girl aesthetic seems in keeping with Rosen’s previous ventures (think Olivier Theyskens at Theory). What we are hoping for is the production of more accessories, which seems inevitable with the success of the PS1 bag.

In Theory: Our Q&A with Olivier Theyskens
A visit to a designer showroom is often missing one significant presence: the designer. Some dash out of town soon after their show for a much-needed rest. Others just prefer to leave dealing with buyers and media to the sales and press teams. But when Theory launched its collaboration with Olivier Theyskens in Paris during the spring ready-to-wear shows, the designer was right there, taking visitors through the collection and happily sitting down to chat about his designs for Theyskens’ Theory. The cool jackets, easy tops and fluid trousers were so well received that Theory offered the Belgian-born designer a permanent gig as artistic director. That must have come as a welcome relief after rocky stints at Nina Ricci and Rochas, where the calibre of his work was never in doubt. Theyskens’ Theory can be found at select Holt Renfrew stores across Canada, TNT in Toronto and online at ssense.com.

Fashion news: be the Levi’s girl, more McQueen up for auction and Theyskens ups the price of Theory
