After Wednesday’s bright and colourful red carpet showing at the People’s Choice Awards, things turned pastel for the Critics’ Choice Awards. Yellow was everywhere last night—from Elizabeth Olsen’s textured Emilio Pucci dress and Diane Kruger’s Prada gown to Elle Fanning’s eyelids. Fuchsia was a favourite lip colour, and braids continue to be the secret twist to many a red carpet updo. Olivia Wilde cut quite a few inches off her hair during the holidays and debuted the new style—complete with ombré highlights—this weekend at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. It’s easy to see why the ombré trend is one that won’t go away anytime soon: done right, it’s always flattering. Wilde looks undoubtedly modern and fresh, and her caramel-coloured strands add another layer of dimension to her already glossy, textured hair. Rachel McAdams’ hair looked so very pretty at the Los Angeles premiere of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Yes, there are dozens and dozens of ways to properly describe this updo, but “pretty” just about sums it up, right? It has a little bit of the perfectly messy, loose tease that was on the runway for Louis Vuitton Spring 2012 (otherwise known as: what happens only when you pull back your hair and are not trying) with enough volume through the crown to keep it modern and youthful. At the back, there’s a series of twisted buns that start at the middle of McAdams’ head and work down to almost the base of her neck.

The approach of winter always seems to bring out one thing on red carpets: the classic Hollywood approach to makeup. That is, deep red lips, thick black lashes and liner, and hair that’s swept into voluminous curls or a simple updo. This weekend, both Anne Hathaway and Julianne Hough graced the red carpet in this timeless manner.

1. Is this colour finally it? Since tweeting way back in July that it was going to take many weeks (and dye jobs) to achieve her next choice of hair colour, Katy Perry has gone from black to badly bleached blonde to Manic Panic pink. Is this pastel peachy-pink hair she debuted at Saturday’s Change Begins Within Benefit Celebration in Los Angeles the final shade, or just another stage of Perry’s ever-evolving hair colour?

Elizabeth Olsen has yet to look like anything but perfection on the red carpet—and her appearance at Wednesday’s Gotham Independent Film Awards likely further cemented her place on best dressed lists everywhere. Just look! The metallic colour of her gown matches perfectly with her her grey-blue eyes, and then the whole look is warmed up with rich bronze and taupe shades across her lips, eyelids, and cheeks.

Alexa Chung and Rachel Weisz both showed off new hair this week: loose, piece-y bangs that hit below the brow line. Frankly, we’re not sure if the look works for either. While Chung is usually the queen of turning casualwear into pretty and polished, she looked rather frazzled at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. (However, she still won the British Style Award!) Actually, Chung’s makeup artist should take some of the blame. While “no makeup” is on trend, it still requires a solid base—by the end of the night, Chung’s dewy skin just looked washed out. And with the new messy bangs hiding her eyebrows, the rest of her features seem to fade away.
