I’ve been staring at this photo of the new KangaRoos bright-white-and-neon Skywalkers ($85, kangaroos.com) for the last two weeks and I’m torn. I really don’t know how I feel about them.

As the clock struck midnight on December 31, a close friend of mine declared that 2009 was our “year to shine”—and I couldn’t agree more. While, sure, my New Year’s resolutions include a few of your garden variety promises (vows to workout more, eat out less, and be on time!), how about a few fashion resolutions, too? Here are three that I’ve come up with.

I haven’t been letting the winter blues get to me, despite the record-breaking temperatures our frosty little city has been receiving. At least not when Fixation (107 23rd St. E., 306-384-7463, fixationshoes.com) has their doors open.

After a season of party hopping in sky-high stilettos and sleek-heeled ankle booties, I am ready to take a sole-searching journey for comfortable (read: flat) shoes.  Oh, and did I mention that I am also craving a sunny hit of colour and a slick patent finish?  Where, oh where, would I ever find such a pair?

With one of the most comprehensive selections of vintage purses in the city, Gadabout (1300 Queen St. E., 416-463-1254, gadabout.ca) is a household name among friends who I am convinced are members of Purseoholics Anonymous.

Recessionista (noun): Person who looks wicked awesome even during times of economic crisis.

I usually have trouble getting behind blend words. (I have one friend who always chirping about the latest bromance or tramedy she saw at the theatre, and I find it to be one hundred per cent cringe-worthy.) But recessionista is slang I can get behind, because it perfectly describes the money saving way I do Christmas. Read on for my favourite thrifts and crafty tips.

The holiday season is upon us and there is no time I love more than Christmas.  I love it all: the busyness, shopping, baking, shopping, decorating, shopping and music. It’s also the time of year when the most glitz and glamour emerges from our closets (and we search for some new head turners).

If I tell you where I shop, will you promise not to tell anyone? I mean, nobody likes to tell her favourite spots, right? So let’s keep it between you and me—top-secret. I’m a mad, mad monkey for Three Monkeys (Les Cours Mont-Royal, 1455 Peel St., Suite 207, 514-284-1333, threemonkeys.ca)! This shop is so beyond perfect balance of Montreal based indie designer and international labels, it’s insane.

In a city with a highly reputable selection of vintage and consignment shops, Meow! (10 Carden St., 519-821-7442) tops the list with its impressive collection of women’s clothing, shoes and accessories. The underground shop is filled with stylish and classic pieces, picked by owner Kara Munn’s expert eye.  The selection of vintage hats alone is worth the trip (damn this cursed over-sized head of mine…women in the ’50s must have had teeny little noggins!)
