To be honest, I thought we might be over them. I mean, once a shoe has been molded into a jelly version of itself, you expect it’s on the way out—one can only stretch a trend so far. But not so with the gladiator, a shoe still storming the streets this season, and storming them in classier, sleeker and downright gorgeous styles.

A recent birthday trip to NYC provided the slap in the face (or kick in the pants, I suppose): within my five-day visit, I had collected a mental catalogue of nearly a hundred pairs of the strappy shoe parading about town. How could I have been so blind to the gladiator’s obvious victory over shoedom? My recovery from the blow was quick. Feelings of revelation were rapidly replaced with twangs of desire and a moment of weakness in Zara even had six pairs slung up one arm as I bent over, nearly perspiring, zipping, sliding and buckling my tired feet into a deep brown pair of the warrior wears.

Now that I’m back on familiar ground, I’ve scoured the shops and filled my arms with gladiator shoes yet again—but this time with Halifax finds—letting you know where to find the sweetest sandals in this city.

Hands and shoes. That’s what I’ve always looked at first in a person. I always thought hands captured the essence of someone and shoes captured their level of style. After all, shoes are what makes an outfit perfect. Some see footwear as an ordinary necessity–I see it as the final touch of elegance and creativity. Shoes should make a statement and people should look at you with a question mark in their face (Is she crazy or she’s cutting edge? Could I really wear those shoes?) or else, they’re just not worth the ride.

Although the weather is still playing some not-so-nice tricks on us, thankfully for yours truly the spring party season is in full, fashionable swing. Case in point, this fashionable girl popped by two very different, but very chic soirees last night.

I think I’m in love. For the past few months I have been searching for a pair of casual spring shoes, hoping that if I have the shoes, perhaps the snow will melt. I’ve been flip-flopping: Vans or Converse? Chucks? Keds? It’s been so long since I’ve had a good pair of slip-ons…I didn’t know where to turn. And then, in a random conversation with a friend, all sole dilemmas were solved. He told me about Toms Shoes (tomsshoes.com). And my search was over.

Shoes have become one of the most sought after fashion items on the runway. Women have been known to spend $14,000 on a pair of Manolo Blahnik alligator boots. Sex and The City even dedicated an entire episode, “A Woman’s Right to Shoes,” to Carrie’s relationship with her designer heels. So perhaps women barbarically wrestling one another over a pair of Pucci boots in Confessions of a Shopaholic may not be so unbelievable after all?
