After being sued by Alexander McQueen this fall for copyright infringement, Steve Madden is looking at another lawsuit, this time from Balenciaga. The house alleges that Madden copied the now famous Lego-inspired shoe from Balenciaga’s Fall 2007 collection. Madden’s pair sold for US$99.95 to the French brand’s US$4,175.

The news lead National Post columnist Nathalie Atkinson to point out on her Twitter feed that Balenciaga has had some looks in recent seasons that bear suspicious resemblance to the work of other designers.

Famed egomaniac and ex-Smith’s frontman Morrissey is collaborating with Stella McCartney on a shoe collection. The drama king is as equally animal-friendly (but far more outspoken) as McCartney—so it only seems appropriate that the two Brits would bond over the need for a leather-free shoe line.

Thierry Mugler Womenswear may be back on the runway next year. Creative director Rosemary Rodriguez, who has been designing Mugler menswear, just showed a mix of new and archived pieces during Russia’s Volvo Fashion Week, sparking rumors that she’s prepping for a RTW show. [FWD]

Giorgio Armani has been hinting at retirement. He told reporters in Moscow, “I’m already organizing staff who will continue my work.” The designer was ill with hepatitis earlier this year and reorganized the management of his company lessen his workload. “Of course I am not eternal, there comes a time when you must hand it over.” [The Cut]

Like a shoe paparazzo, Toronto’s beloved Tommy Ton of Jak & Jil captures some of the world’s most beautiful heels in action. Zillions of women devotedly visit the site to catch glimpses of the worldly lives these shoes lead. If you are a footwear cyber-gawker you’ve probably noticed a new breed of heels has been on the streets over the last few years. Remember the gun heels by Chanel? The tea cup and Baroque heels from Miu Miu or the Balenciaga Sportiletto? Not only are the silhouettes outrageously sculptural, the new shoes have also reached obscene heights–last fall, Christian Louboutin told The Wall Street Journal that he was planning on releasing an 8-inch platform this year.

An early summer getaway landed me in the beautiful west coast of Canada.  The combination of Vancouver’s lush landscape and warm breeze caused me to swirl into an uncontrolled shopping frenzy. Give me a little warm weather and some sun, and this girl’s gotta shop.

I grew up with two older brothers and with that came the art of making throwing stars out of soup cans lids and learning to withstand the torture of a good old fashioned snake bite (the arm-twisting kind).  As much as I love my big bros, I was like every little girl in my position–I longed for a sister.  Someone to braid my hair, puffy paint my clothes and a sibling who would appreciate my deep-seated crush on Uncle Jessie.  But, above all, I wanted a sister to share my shoe fetish.

When sisters Jennifer and Laura Ripley open Luna Blue (2611 14 St. SW, 403-244-1644, lunablueshoes.com) this past September, it came together organically.  With thriving careers—Jennifer working for the Military Family Resource Centre and Laura as a nurse–they both felt the need to shake things up and pursue their common passion for shoes. 

There is nothing sexy about a pulled hamstring muscle.  I wish I could say that my injury stems from the half marathon I recently completed (if I had actually signed up, trained and ran). Oops. Sadly it appears to have originated from my weekly rotation of high heels. Scratch that–high hells. Needless to say, my interest in flats has skyrocketed to Audrey Hepburn proportions.
