The daily steal: Emergency flats, $25
The well-heeled segment of the population probably won’t like admitting they carry a pair of emergency flats, for when those sky-scraping pumps begin to feel like medieval torture devices. Luckily, they don’t have to. Fold a Sole flats ($25, foldasole.com) as the name suggests, fold in half, making them easy to slip into most purses. […]

When it comes to clogs, go with the Swedes
The New York Times T Magazine blog recently ran a story on Oregon-based “clogmaster” Cecilia Tidlund. Asked what she thought of the sometimes-ridiculous, sometimes-amazing clogs that appeared on the Chanel, Miu Miu, and Louis Vuitton runways, the Swedish founder of one of America’s first bespoke clog companies said, “I’d rather people get into a bad fashion clog than a ballet flat or flip fop. Flimsy shoes are ruining people’s feet. I’ve seen 12 year olds with bunions.”

The daily steal: Leather ballet flats, $60
Have you browsed the Bay’s shoe department lately? Among the great finds by Sam Edelman, Botkier and Rachel Rachel Roy, I recently spied a table full of gorgeous, great quality leather ballet flats by hitherto unremarkable house brand Expression that fare very well compared to premium versions that go for $150 and up.

The daily steal: Neutral-toned pumps, $80
Blame Phoebe Philo at Celine (everyone else is), but there’s no escaping nude tones this spring–or fall for that matter. This sleek pump from Aldo ($80, aldoshoes.com) is right on trend and a nice palate-cleanser after seasons of embellishment.

Vancouver: Tread lightly in these recycled-tire sandals. (They’re cute, we promise)
You know it’s almost sandal season when running to the yoga studio in flip flops makes more sense than doing it in Uggs. (Yes, I wear both—I do live in Vancouver, after all) And one of the first on my to-buy list is these eco-friendly pair by Vancouver-based designer Leticia Calvo Treffot for her label, […]

The daily steal: Deck shoes, $70
Born and raised in Toronto, I don’t exactly know what a full spring season is like. So, as soon as it gets schvitzy in the downtown core, I rid myself of socks, roll up my slacks and chuck on a pair of deck shoes. Which is why I’m all about this pair of navy and […]

The daily steal: Preppy slip-ons, $18
How amazing that just after learning that a follow-up to The Official Preppy Handbook is due out in September, I should stumble across these slip-ons while browsing on urbanoutfitters.com. While I’ve never summered on Cape Cod (does Lake Huron count?), I don’t own a pair of Nantucket Reds and I know not a soul named […]

The daily steal: Brogues, $59
Where heels are neither reasonable nor desirable, brogues have been appearing as the practical shoe of choice (in place of the once ubiquitous ballet flat). This creamy Joe Fresh Style pair ($59, joe.ca) is perfect for strolling sunny spring streets sans-socks. Eager to see what Joe Fresh has cooked up for Fall 2010? Catch our […]

The daily steal: Ruffled shoes, $90
It’s spring. It’s Fashion Week. I hear it might even be warm at some point. These peach pink ruffled heels ($90, aldoshoes.ca) are about as girly as it’s possible for me to get, but after a winter of slugging around in boots, boots and more boots, I’m ready to be light on my feet.

Vancouver: Turn your beat-up runners into a basketball court
While it has yet to be seen what the longer legacy of the Olympics will be, one that’s sticking around for now is Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe (nikereuseashoe.com/Vancouver) drive. Drop off your old runners—and no, they needn’t be Nike—at one of six collection bins in the company’s stores around Vancouver and they’ll be recycled into three types […]

The daily steal: Brightly-coloured sandals, $20
We’re just coming off a long week of neutral-coloured clothes on the runway at Paris Fashion Week and even though those camel-hued clothes aren’t in stores for fall, I already feel like I need a dose of the brights. These sandals are only $20 at Old Navy (oldnavy.ca) and perfect for a little orange aid.
