How to Take the Perfect Profile Picture: 8 Tips for Acing Twitter, Tinder and More
We may have taught you how to take the best Instagram photo, but what do you know about taking the perfect profile picture? We all know Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and dating apps like Tinder each serve a different purpose in our lives, so naturally each platform should be given special attention. And since it’s the first picture a follower comes across, it’s important that it’s a memorable one.
When it comes to choosing the perfect profile picture, bloggers, editors and other social media stars have the skill down pat. But what’s their secret to having such recognizable profiles? Thanks to years of social media experience and connecting with thousands of followers, they’ve come to know the ins and outs of what pictures works best for them. Cases in point: Using one consistent photo across her Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, Nicole Warne of Gary Pepper Girl can easily be recognized on all her social media platforms, while Fashion Toast‘s Rumi Neely‘s different head shots is easy to pinpoint amongst the sea of people we follow via her iconic nonchalant look and beach-wavy hairstyle.
Before we decide to give up because we a) don’t have professional photographers on speed dial or b) have as many years of experience in the digital world like many of the social media stars, it doesn’t mean we can’t strive for the perfect picture for our social media accounts. To help us figure out the secret on how to take the perfect profile picture, we tapped into the brains of Chriselle Lim, personal style blogger, Youtuber and wardrobe stylist of The Chriselle Factor (she has over 315 thousand followers on Instagram alone!) and Canada’s Maybelline New York lead makeup artist, Grace Lee. You know, just in case you were thinking of using that spring break picture for your professional LinkedIn profile. From our personal Facebook page to our fun Tinder profiles, we present you eight expert tips and tricks on how to take the perfect profile picture for all your social media platforms.

Why J.Crew’s Pinterest catalogue preview is a groundbreaking social media move
“Just for our friends on Pinterest,” the caption reads at the top of the newest board on J.Crew’s Pinterest account. The brand, known for its versatile knits and colourful separates, has taken to the digital world to give fans a first glance at its highly anticipated September catalogue (which features a variety of our Fall 2013 trends, we might add). The caption also gives instructions for eager customers to pre-order their favourite looks before the collection hits stores this Wednesday. The choice to use Pinterest for a sneak peek was promoted this morning on J.Crew’s Facebook page and Twitter account with a tweet: “Want an exclusive first-look at our September Style Guide before anyone else?” And what could be more tempting than that?

Social Media Star: How Christine Martinez pinned her way to 5 million Pinterest followers
Each Friday, we’ll be profiling one of our favourite movers and shakers on social media. From the pop-up power of Pinterest to the beautifully crafted images on Instagram, we’re learning the tricks of the trade from the ladies that do it best (and most stylishly, of course).
Bay Area power pinner Christine Martinez was one of the first to hop on the Pinterest bandwagon back in 2010. The 8th to receive an invite to the now hugely popular online scrapboard site, Martinez pinned her way to the top with her penchant for quirky interior decorating, fashion, vibrant prints and of course, dog accoutrements fit for her dog Miles. “It was a very cool and unique experience to be on Pinterest when only a handful of others were, and to be able to have so much influence over how people use Pinterest today,” she says.
With over 5 million followers, it would be an understatement to say that the popular social media platform hasn’t changed her life. Not only has she travelled to exotic places to live-pin fashion shoots with brands like Calypso St. Barth and Cole Haan, but her Pinterest reputation has also led her to the role as the creative director for the up and coming shopping social media platform luvocracy.com. To let fellow pinners into her psyche, she’s even written a whole book, The Complete Idiots Guide to Pinterest Marketing.
We did the book one better and got to know more about the girl behind the screen for our first Social Media Star feature.

In a fashion context, documenting the items in our closets is a biggie.
As seasons change, so does our wardrobe. And while we’d all love for that process to be seamless, we all know it’s not. Enter the over 50 closet apps now on the market, here to help catalog items, document daily looks, and get inspired. From setting up your own personal look book to helping you find which colour is currently hottest in fashionable capitals across the globe, we’ve rounded up 6 of our favourite apps to help you revolutionize your day-to-day fashion routine. Instagram, e-commerce apps and hackathons: Why the fashion industry is embracing technology more than ever

Photography by Lewis Mirrett 5 fashion websites and apps that you need to know about now »
Without a doubt, it’s time to take a closer look at what designers, fashion brands and industry fans have been getting up to online. From live-streaming fashion shows, envy-inducing social media chronicles, mobile shopping apps and e-retailer pre-sales, the fashion world is becoming more and more tech-oriented. And while customers love these new innovations, brands are also loving the benefits that come with increased technological and online engagement.
Rebecca Minkoff is one company that has had business thrive thanks to its digital presence, which includes an e-commerce site, blog and social media presence across Twitter, Instagram and, most recently, Vine. However, the biggest payoff came with the launch of the Rebecca Minkoff Spring 2013 jewellery collection via a YouTube video featuring Man Repeller blogger Leandra Medine. Uri Minkoff, CEO of Rebecca Minkoff, told WWD, “January [2013] became the biggest non-holiday e-commerce month sales wise in the company’s history. January jewelry sales specifically have increased by 250 percent over sales from November and December combined.”
Indeed, partnerships do make a difference, especially for fashion brands. Earlier this month two fashion-themed hackathons took place during New York Fashion Week. (Don’t worry, we also needed to Google the definition of hackathon: they’re collaborative events where developers gather to create a new app or software platform in a limited amount of time.)

They said/We said: How will Facebook’s going public affect the fashion industry?

Photography by Keystone As we watched Mark Zuckerberg ring the bell on Wall Street Friday morning, we wondered: how is this going to change how we use social media? And, for those of us who are style-inclined: how is this going to affect the fashion industry?
Though Zuckerberg’s proclivity for hoodies won’t land him a “style icon” status anytime soon, Facebook evolving into a public company will definitely impact the fashion industry in many ways.
The social media giant, which currently has 900 million users worldwide, opened to the public with an initial public offering of $38 a share, making Facebook the most valuable company that’s ever gone public. With a total worth now of $104 billion (in other words, almost unimaginable amounts of money to invest back into the company), the ability to do more in terms of advertising, online shopping and other ventures has never been more feasible.
For fashion retailers in particular, Facebook going public probably means that they will no longer be limited to simply tallying one’s “likes” as a measure of success. Though the sharing and community aspects of Facebook are valuable to retailers in terms of brand presence, there are now more opportunities to create new social media–friendly e-commerce and advertising tactics than ever before.
Previous efforts with online shopping on Facebook didn’t exactly take off, forcing retailers like Gap to shutter their Facebook shops. However, now that there is an unprecedented amount of money in the bank, Facebook can begin to explore other means of social commerce that will provide shoppers with a more “seamless and convenient” shopping experience.
Think about it: Burberry, for example, has over 12 million “likes” on their Facebook page. Though they have advertised heavily on Facebook for some time now, if the social media network could provide the retailer with new, improved means of advertising and online shopping, Burberry could capitalize on their huge social media following in ways they never have before.
Though we’d need a crystal ball to accurately predict how everything is going to pan out now that the company has gone public, it’s probably safe to say that this will not only mean big dollars for involved parties, but new ways of shopping and interacting online for everybody.
