Inside last night’s sold-out Lana Del Rey show in Toronto: The world’s biggest indie star on the rise and the stylish fans watching
Last night’s sold-out Lana Del Rey show at Toronto’s Mod Club was as much about buzz as it was about music. Del Ray’s star has risen extraordinarily fast in the less than three months since her first single, “Video Games,” complete with a (maybe) homemade video, was released on YouTube—it currently has 8 million views and counting—and fans everywhere can’t get enough. Or, rather, they can’t seem to figure her out. There are too many words that come to mind when trying to describe the 25-year-old singer, so I’ll just go with “dichotomist.” Her voice? Purring meets badass. Her lyrics? Melancholy, yet hood. Her sound? Poppy, yet cinematic. Her looks? Southern beauty queen meets Ann Margaret meets the Pink Ladies. She’s impossibly beautiful, with lips too beestung to be natural. Though she’s reported to have grown up in Lake Placid, her accent is mysteriously Jersey. (There are those who scoff at her put-on identity, such as her claims to have grown up in a trailer park when, in reality, she attended boarding school, but Bob Dylan had similarly fictional roots.)

As one half of the UK-based eyewear brand Cutler & Gross (his partner-in-design is Tony Gross), he always keeps his eyes on the prize. “We have never compromised our original idea of making functional, high-quality eyewear that appeals to sophisticated tastes,” he says. Four-eyes no more! Introducing the mother lode of stylish eyewear options
Those of us with a former four-eyes complex will now have access to the mother lode of stylish options courtesy of U.K. eyewear design brand Cutler and Gross’ first Canadian flagship in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood. The brand is known for their handcrafted and cutting-edge designs that have made their frames standout since 1969 (not to mention creating some legendary frames for the likes of Elton John and Madonna). The store boasts over 4,000 pairs of kaleidoscopic-coloured frames to choose from and a VIP room that is dedicated to showcase over 600 vintage frames from the 40 years the duo have been creating their bespoke eyewear. The selection will also include their latest collection inspired by winter traditions and their collaboration with Erdem.

Take a digital backdrop streaming scenes of waves and sand, add swag bags with beach towels, parade out the scantily-clad bods, and you’ve got Tosca Delfino‘s Spring 2012 lesson in island chic. Basic bathers everywhere were put to swimsuit shame with models walking down the runway in accessorized bikini combos and high cut one-piece suits. Bracelets, belts, and woven hats accompanied sheer gauzy cover-ups, transforming the notion of swimwear into a complete head-to-toe look. Printed whales on navy bottoms, elephants on a faded yellow top, and—in the name of CanadaCool—a one-piece adorned with a print of the Toronto cityscape. (Where’s Drake when you need him…)
