Charting the Unlikely History of Ruffles
The ruffle’s watershed moment in pop culture likely occurred when Jerry Seinfeld, the founding father of normcore, debuted his ostentatious “puffy shirt” on national television to great LOLs and general SMHs (for the record it was a poet blouse, and it was amazing). Outside of that, the ruffle’s claim to fame has pretty much been […]

“I had a divine shoe today,” says legendary footwear designer Manolo Blahnik, talking about his work as if it were a spectacular meal. Blahnik is on the phone from outside Milan, where he’s visiting a factory that is working on an upcoming collection. He tells me that it’s the first clear day after a long […]

History’s Top 5 parties: From Masquerade Balls to Surrealist Dinners, They’re Almost too Good to Be True!
As the buzz surrounding tonight’s Met Gala reaches a fever pitch, many websites have done a good job of reflecting on the event’s storied past—the dresses, the glamour, the history-making moments! And while dishing on the red carpet has become a full on spectator sport, what happens beyond the velvet rope is something many of us plebes will really never experience. In the context of high society’s glittering history, the Met Gala is just one of many cool parties the crème de le crème mingle at. In 2011, Assouline published a retrospective on the greatest balls of the last century (the book has been on my must-own list since) and here we count down five that have made us green with past life regression envy.

The Suit: A look back at the smouldering Le Smoking
See the tuxedo suit on the Spring 2013 runways »
Sometimes a woman feels like puttin’ on the Ritz. Whether it’s worn by Marlene Dietrich, Bianca Jagger or Rihanna, a tuxedo suit has the power to ignite a room faster than any little black dress. With its sharp lines, classic appeal and feminine details—a frilly shirt here, a rhinestone bow-tie there—it’s little wonder that fashion houses like Lanvin, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent and Ermanno Scervino have reimagined this iconic eveningwear look for Spring 2013.
The first haute couture tuxedo suit—a black velvet pantsuit with a matching vest and a white shirt with ruffled cuffs—was designed by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966. Dubbed Le Smoking, this gender-bending look instantly caught fire, and soon afterward the designer launched his ready-to-wear label, Rive Gauche, with more accessibly priced smoking suits. The timing couldn’t have been better, since the second wave of the women’s emancipation movement marched into the history books that same decade. Power dressing after dark was now an exercise in equal opportunity.
When YSL took his final runway bow in 2002, he had played on countless variations of this signature ensemble in his 45-year career. “Fashions come and go, but style is forever,” he once said. May the tuxedo suit always burn bright.

Lana Del Rey wore an oversized white suit to a Golden Globes afterparty and we’re just not sure how we feel about it
Do you like Lana Del Rey’s new look? Lana Del Rey is nothing if not a performance artist. Through various states of undress, we’ve seen her play everything from Lolita to a rough riding runaway. If Sunday night’s outfit is any indication, it looks like a Bianca Jagger/Jerry Hall mix might be next on the […]

Take a look back at 50 seriously stylish years of The Rolling Stones (plus, enter to win your own copy of their new book!)
It’s hard to believe The Rolling Stones are celebrating 50 years together today (or maybe not so hard if you’ve ever gotten a close-up of Mick’s face), but the original rock style gods are indeed ringing the milestone in. You’re welcome, Hedi Slimane/Johnny Depp/Julian Casablancas/Pete Doherty/…Britney Spears?
Starting with the band’s first jaunt on stage at London’s Marquee Club on July 12, 1962, the Stones have been through five decades of riotous partying, hair-raising performances, illustrious relationships and above all else, some of the most amazing singles modern music history’s ever known. To celebrate the Stones’ birthday, music journalist Hanspeter Kuenzeler has teamed up with The eBook People to put together the two-part 50 Years: The Rolling Stones – Views From the Inside, Views From the Outside, a 2000+ page collection of the best journalistic material spanning the band’s half-century-long run. The book will touch on everything from Mick Jagger’s famously stylish marriage in St. Tropez to Bianca Jagger to the various members’ many struggles with drugs (including Brian Jones’ death and Keith Richards’ infamous arrest for possession of heroin in Toronto).

Screaming fans (and Baby Spice!) line up to see David Beckham’s hot bod in London
It’s a Beckham takeover out there! Yesterday, we reported that Victoria Beckham’s newest line was selling out of Harvey Nichols. Now it’s David Beckham’s turn, with his bodywear collection hitting H&M stores worldwide today. The soccer legend celebrated in London last night with an in-store launch party and an après-bash at a custom-made pop-up gentleman’s club. And with a campaign shot like this, it’s no wonder ladies like Bianca Jagger, Charlotte Dellal, and Emma Bunton (a.k.a. Baby Spice) showed up to support cop a feel. Last time things got this Beckham crazy, it was the future, and we were in a space ship.

Fashion’ween: We’ve got costumes like Jagger in 9 steps!
Find out how to dress up as Mick and Bianca Jagger »

Previously on Fashion’ween: Karl Lagerfeld »Today for Fashion’ween we’re bringing you one of the most iconic fashion couples of all time: Mick and Bianca Jagger, circa their 1971 wedding in St. Tropez. (You know the one: Bianca in her famed white Yves Saint Laurent white tux. Mick in all his rockstar hotness.) Fair warning: it takes quite a bit of money to achieve this vintage look without, well, going vintage—but then again, Bianca and Mick were rock ‘n’ roll royalty so we think this costume worth going all out for.

FASHION plates: Bianca Jagger
By Randi Bergman and Jordan Porter
With the glitz, glamour and decadence of the seventies virtually dominating our psyches as of late, we cant help but keep coming back to the one of the decade’s brightest stars: Bianca Jagger. Famous for her marriage to Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger, exotically high cheekbones, love for all things Halston and penchant for making an entrance⎯Jagger entered her 32nd birthday party at famed club Studio 54 perched on a white horse⎯there weren’t many women more fabulous than she. In honour of this week’s muse, we giddily e-shopped our little Jagger-loving hearts out.
