Zendaya Wore a Crop Top to the CFDAs
It has to be said: We have been spoiled by Zendaya. Putting aside her pre-Summer 2021 fashion resume, the past few months have been the ultimate ice cream sundae of decadent fashion, with her stylist Law Roach as the pastry chef and Timothée Chalamet as the cherry on top. So, after being treated to a […]

All the angles on Rihanna’s barely there CFDA outfit
All the angles on Rihanna’s CFDA outfit »
See all of Rihanna’s recent looks »If you had any doubts that Rihanna is the fashion goddess of our time, look no further than last night’s CFDA Awards, where she went badder than ever in a barely there fishnet dress embellished with over 216,000 Swarovski crystals to accept the award for Fashion Icon of the Year. The outfit was no a doubt a big “eff you” to Instagram, who shut down her account last month after she posted a topless photo of herself on the cover of French fashion mag Lui. It was also a pretty ballin’ Sally Bowles moment, if Sally Bowles was a Never Nude flapper, ready for yet another closeup. “Fashion has always been my defense mechanism,” she said, during her acceptance speech. It’s been that for all of us fashion kids too, which is just one of the millions of reasons we love Rihanna so.
Some may see Rihanna’s CFDA outfit as just another in her near-flawless run of fashion moments, but what’s just one small step for BadGalRiri is one giant leap for fashion kind. This glittering, sugar-coated message to the Instagram establishment is in effect the ultimate slut shaming defence. (Stepping out in a faux fur stole emblazoned with the word “fear” is another brilliant one.)

CFDA Awards 2013: Our recap of the winners, the red carpet outfits and more
See photos from the CFDA Awards 2013 »
The who’s who of fashion piled into the Lincoln Centre’s Alice Tully Hall last night for the CFDA Awards 2013 in New York City. For those who are a little unfamiliar to the event, the ceremony is to the fashion industry what the Grammys are to music. Let’s just say, you’re more likely to see Zac Posen on the red carpet, that you are J Biebs.
From Hilary Rhoda’s Helmut Lang number to Nicole Richie’s metallic maxi, the red carpet saw fashions finest (accompanied by their favourite six-foot-tall friends) in a variety of daring ensembles. Adriana Lima’s floor sweeping Givenchy frock left little to the imagination with its sheer skirt, while Jessica Chastain’s little black after-party-ready dress looked fabulous with her main accessory, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, whom she later presented the international award to. Erin Wasson looked positively futuristic in her edgy Alexander Wang gown while Miranda Kerr supported the boys at Proenza Schouler with a stunning blue mini by the label. Kerr’s fellow Victoria’s Secret angel Candice Swanepoel accompanied a very lucky Prabal Gurung to the event. Poor Michael Kors, who couldn’t decide on which model-friend to be his plus one, ended up bringing two dazzling dates, Karolina Kurkova and Cody Horn, who wore shimmering pieces from his collection. Meanwhile, Mary-Kate Olsen swapped sisters for the night, dressing Elizabeth Olsen in The Row while she stuck to her vintage penchant in Issey Miyake.

They said/We said: And the CFDA Fashion Icon Award goes to… Johnny Depp?
Looks like all those years of fedoras and pirate hats have finally paid off for Johnny Depp, who was announced last night as the winner of the CFDA’s Fashion Icon Award. Depp is the first man to win the award, which will be presented in June.
While the actor’s style has always been questionable entertaining, he seems a bit of a peculiar choice compared to the more obvious past winners like Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker, Iman and Kate Moss. We do love Depp’s penchant for headwear (and oh how trendy it is this season, ahem, Marc Jacobs), but has he ever made a mary-jane Manolo fly off the shelves? We didn’t think so.
As for the serious fashion nods, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen received a much-deserved nomination for The Row as Womenswear Designer of the Year. Of course, the twin designers face some serious competition with Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler both vying for the same award. While the rest of the list of nominees and honorees makes sense, we’ve got to ask: Is it Johnny’s sex appeal that helped him make the cut?
