Last week at the Calgary International Film Festival (calgaryfilm.com) opening night gala, FASHION and a stylish crowd celebrated the beginning of a 10-day Alberta film frenzy with a red carpet walk, the world-premiere of Jim Cliffe’s déjà vu flick, Donovan’s Echo, and a champagne reception with food truck fare at Eighth Avenue Place.

Veteran actor Bruce Greenwood arrived by limo to help present the film, in which he plays a police officer and friend to another movie-vet, Danny Glover.

Last night marked the opening of the Calgary International Film Festival and ten days of non-stop movie going and partying. Having attended at least a dozen film fest galas world wide, Jacqueline Dupuis, executive director of CIFF, knows a few things about getting red carpet ready. Luckily she took a few moments out of her over-stressed and over-scheduled life to give me the lowdown on her look for opening night.

In the immortal words of Mick Jagger, “It’s only rock ’n’ roll but I like it!” There wasn’t much not to like about the award-winning documentary Rock Prophecies, which screened Saturday night at the Calgary International Film Festival. From director John Chester, this film explored the life of Robert Knight, an iconic rock photog who’s snapped everyone from Led Zepplin to Aussie band Sick Puppies.

After hearing the film’s wicked soundtrack, I was tempted to skip the after bash and head home to host my own personal party, complete with some long-shelved LPs, but I did my film fest duty and headed down to the Barley Mill for the bash.

Now in its tenth year the Calgary International Film Festival is no stranger to the biz or its beautiful people. No small feat for a city best known for its annual rodeo, the Calgary Stampede–10 solid days of boots, buckles, Stetsons and beer!  Last night however, the full-on assault of Western fringe so prevalent during Stampede week had been shelved for party glam, smart suits, and of course the ubiquitous LBD.

This week marks the opening of the Calgary International Film Festival (calgaryfilm.com) and ten days of premiere-hopping and socializing with the stars.

Taking time out from her busy gig as executive director for CIFF, Jacqueline Dupuis shared with me a few of her style secrets that take her from day to night over ten days and approximately one hundred and eighty eight films. Rule number one was enlisting the help of a stylist, Leah Van Loon.

After 10 packed days of fashion, films and fun, the Calgary International Film Festival came to a close over the weekend. But before we said goodbye to the cameras and action, we caught the last two movies in this year’s inaugural Fashion in Film series, Useless by Chinese director Jia Zhang-ke and Gloss, set in modern-day Russia and directed by Andrei Konchalovsky.

Calgary is a cosmopolitan city, full of affluent audiences, hungry for fashion. But, anyone who lives here knows prices have soared over the past few years. For some, it’s hard enough to justify a vanilla-bean latte, let alone those killer Betsey Johnson pumps. So, what better way to indulge CIFF audiences, than with a heaping spoonful of Canada’s most reasonably-priced fashion line, Joe Fresh Style.

Each year in February and September the imposing white tents are erected and for one dazzling week, designers, models, editors and celebrities gather to see the collections and be photographed in their amazing ensembles.

The long line of moviegoers snaked around Calgary’s Globe Theatre on Monday evening, anxiously awaiting the screening of a remastered version of the iconic Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Couples canoodled while gaggles of young ladies, some dressed up in tiaras and tribute T-shirts braved the chill to see Audrey onscreen again.

Sephora opened its doors to eager Calgarians just over a year ago and the honeymoon isn’t even close to being over.  So, you can imagine the excitement when hundreds of gala-goers at Belgo were welcomed by Sephora beauty consultants to kick off this years Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF).  Armed with tool belts, brushes and make-up palettes with every color under the sun, Sephora’s beauty team was delighted to offer guests some unexpected star treatment.  Guests were quick to fill the make-up chairs and soak up beauty tips and techniques from the professionals.

Calgary’s mini heat wave got hotter Thursday night as the red-carpet opening gala for the ninth annual Calgary Film Festival took place at Belgo, the downtown French bistro/Belgian brasserie. Amid the sea of cocktail dresses and sharp suits, Jacqueline Dupuis, the festival’s executive director looked effortlessly cool with her tiered black dress and grey pumps. Her mane of wavy blonde hair would make Gwyneth Paltrow shutter with regret for cutting her tresses.
