Fashion news: Claudia Schiffer photos interpreted as racist, Crocs save a life and Fashion’s Night Out cranks up the fun
Photographs of Claudia Schiffer by Karl Lagerfeld for a Stern Fotographie 60th anniversary retrospective are being slammed as racially insensitive. In one image Schiffer is captured wearing black face, and in another the supermodel is made to look Asian. “There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines,” said Shevelle Rhule, of Pride magazine in response to the pictures. “This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models.” [Telegraph]
But it’s not all bad news for the Kaiser. Last night he received the Legion of Honor at the Elysée presidential palace in Paris. [Styleite]

Fashion news: Gaga in Prada, snowboarding models and authorities still telling kids to pull up their pants
Yesterday, we reported Lady Gaga‘s odd absence from the red carpet at the Met Gala. While the wires were oddly empty of Gaga in the Prada tux she reportedly wore after changing out of her sparkly catsuit, The Cut recently published a rare shot of Gaga in said tux. With no spikes or sequins or live animals protruding from the outfit, Gaga looks strangely… normal. [The Cut]

Fashion’s Night Out, a shopping celebration organized by Vogue in each of its global cities has expanded from a one night affair into six nights. What was last year referred to as a “drunken chaos,” and saw Barbara Walters singing a duet with Oscar de la Renta, will kick off in France on September 7, end in Greece and Turkey on the 16th, with countries like Britain, Australia, India and Taiwan in between. Sadly, Canada was nowhere to be seen on the bill. [WWD]

Fashion news: ALT to host Manolo sale, SJP does her Halston homework, and L’Oréal buys Essie
Burberry is launching a 30-piece April Showers collection this month to keep customers shopping until the first fall 2010 deliveries hit stores in June, and providing items that are apropos to April: trench coats, rain boots and umbrellas. [Coutorture]
If Fashion’s Night Out had a slogan, it would be bigger is better, because that’s where the organizers’ heads are at. The event will supposedly be the biggest fashion show ever put on in New York, with 200 models walking, with 1,500 seats for oglers. [Fashionista]
Nail polish specialist Essie has been bought by L’Oréal USA, who has plans to expand the brand into cosmetics and eventually bring it to the mass market. [WWD]

NYFW news: Lam’s bold move, FNO till falls short at Barneys, McAdams in Vogue?, and more
We are going to need every brightly coloured, boldly printed piece from Derek Lam’s collection. [YouTube]
No shortage of prints at Diane von Furstenberg either. The collection pulled in everything from Egypt to the Pre-Raphaelites to hippie chic. Video and more NY Fashion Week news, after the jump.

Video: Coco Rocha’s life is pretty damn glamourous
We always suspected that being a model essentially entailed montages of swinging around guitars and shopping bags and running down hallways barefoot in an evening gown, and Coco Rocha has confirmed our suspicions. Rocha has conceived a bit of fun self-promotion for Modelina.com, set to JET’s “She’s a Genius.” It’s basically a fantasy day in the life of a Rocha, created to promote Fashion’s Night Out.
Check out the photo’s below from FNO: Rocha, Alexander Wang, Sessilee Lopez, Raquel Zimmermann et al. rock out on inflatable air guitars.

NYFW reads: Fashion Angel, Hamish sings and more
Vena Cava and BCBG showed yesterday during opening day at New York Fashion Week, but the designer that captured everyone’s attention (despite a 9 a.m. timeslot) was Michael Angel and his wild, angular prints. More pics at the link. [StyleBubble]
Vena Cava was apparently no slouch either, setting the collection of smart dresses against the backdrop of a Fiery Furnaces performance. [Fashionista]
